University Health Services, the Johns Hopkins medical campus student health service, is seeking a Psychologist to serve in our University Health Services-Mental Health (UHS-MH) program. UHS-MH is obligated to evaluate all non-urgent requests for mental services within two weeks of the initial phone call or referral, and all urgent requests within one to two days.

This position is a full-time exempt senior staff position, and administratively reports to the University Health Services Nurse Manager and receives clinical supervision from the University Health Services – Mental Health Clinical Director.

The psychologist will provide therapy, assessment, consultation and crisis intervention to our population of graduate and professional students, house staff, post-doctoral fellows, trainees and their eligible spouses. The therapy provided will be brief with the exception of patients with serious psychiatric illness who may benefit from long-term therapy. Such long-term therapy will be provided only on a case-by-case basis as approved by the collaborating psychiatrist.

In collaboration with the attending psychiatrist, the psychologist provides clinical evaluation of students/trainees of the East Baltimore Johns Hopkins Medical Campus. Provides evaluation and ongoing psychotherapy treatment of psychiatric symptoms and behavioral disorders. Consults with and/or facilitates timely and appropriate referrals to other professional staff, as well as to other Departments on- or off-campus, as appropriate. Participates in the development and maintenance of accurate and comprehensive referral files.  Documents all encounters with clients and maintains records in accordance with University and professional standards. Completes all required electronic documentation in Titanium Schedule and/or other electronic record used by the program. This includes but is not limited to patient demographics, client notes, diagnoses and all documentation related to appointments and scheduling.

Interacts with medical students, house staff, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, nursing students and their families, as well as with faculty and staff of both the Hospital and University, and with community professionals. Facilitates triage and care of acute cases and emergencies.

Is committed to creating a warm and welcoming clinical environment where students and trainees feel supported and respected as they pursue their personal, academic and professional goals. 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Utilizes brief psychotherapy methods, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy or Interpersonal Therapy techniques, to treat patients collaboratively with the treating psychiatrist.
  • Maintains a caseload of clients consisting of graduate students, medical students, nursing students, house staff, postdoctoral fellows, and their eligible adult dependents.
  • Continues to see clients as long as medically indicated, as determined in collaboration with the treating psychiatrist and/or the Director of University Health Services- Mental Health.
  • Terminates therapy when clients are unlikely to benefit from continuing therapy and sees clients as often as necessary to manage their acute crisis with a goal of getting them to their pre-crisis level of functioning.
  • Continually assesses the needs of current clients with the collaborating psychiatrist to determine whether and when therapy frequency can decrease and whether or not it ought to continue when clients are stable and/or improving and doing well.
  • Continually assesses the needs of clients with the collaborating psychiatrist to determine whether clients who are not doing well might require more intensive treatment and or psychiatric medications or re-evaluation
  • Makes available at least two new client evaluation slots per week throughout the calendar year.
  • Must be able to manage a heavy, and at times, challenging caseload. Willing and able to flex work hours to add additional slots as requested during times of high seasonal demand for services, such as during the fall or spring.  
  • Transitions clients needing continuing care to outside mental health professionals within 90 days of graduation.
  • Conducts initial evaluations and phone triages as per the clinic’s triage schedule. Places triaged clients who require further evaluation and therapy on his/her schedule within two weeks of the initial triage phone call.
  • Participates in equitable call schedule, as assigned, including daytime and after hour emergency on-call (in rotation with other clinical staff).
  • Interacts with students and trainees on the east Baltimore medical campus: medical students, nursing students, house staff, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and their families, as well as with faculty and staff of both the Hospital and University, and with community professionals. Facilitates triage and care of acute cases and emergencies.
  • Interfaces with other professionals when clinically appropriate for patient care. Seeks and provides clinical supervision when appropriate. Attends required team meetings for collaboration with UHS-MH staff. Attends continuing professional education activities as required to maintain certification.
  • Follows UHS policies and procedures as outlined in administrative meetings, internal documents, emails and memoranda and assists with the shaping and implementation of such policies as requested.
  • Promptly reports all clinical issues that might affect our students and trainees to the UMH Clinical Director and Nurse Practitioner Manager. Promptly reports all administrative issues that might arise to the Nurse Manager of UHS for resolution.
  • Uses appropriate email etiquette when emailing colleagues both internally and externally to our organization, as per UHS policy.
  • Follows UHS policy regarding coverage of clients when requesting leave or vacation.
  • Potential for advancement to leadership responsibilities and roles.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Doctoral degree in psychology is required.  Knowledge of cognitive behavioral therapy, Interpersonal therapy or dialectical behavioral techniques is helpful. Two years clinical experience in the field of psychology required, three or more preferred. Licensed to practice in the State of Maryland required.  Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

Preferred Qualifications:

Additional supervision and training post-licensure preferred. Experience with college and/or graduate and professional students and young adult population preferred

Physical Requirements:
Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.  Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s).  Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
