This position carries significant responsibilities for the underlying support functions needed to ensure that Duke Health makes appropriate strategic and business decisions. Responsibilities include the management and utilization of accurate, complete and reliable databases and forecasting tools necessary to provide the information used in strategic and business decisions. This position will be required to understand the fundamental structure of databases and have a working knowledge of PC programs used to manipulate, organize, and present data and information in a meaningful and informative manner. Further, this position requires the ability to interact with various levels of the organization in order to assist in the interpretation and use of that data. 

Data Analysis and Presentation

  • Oversee the analysis and collection of data to respond to information needs for Duke Health strategic and business planning functions, understanding which data sources and components to utilize based on the given area of focus
  • Assist Duke Health entities and staff in effectively analyzing, interpreting, and presenting data and information to various parties both internal and external to Duke.
  • Participate in development and regular production of standard reports. 
  • Incorporate Excel graphics, PowerPoint presentations, Tableau, and maps (using MapInfo, MapPoint, ArcGIS), as appropriate, to aid in the visual representation of market information. 
  • Assist Duke Health staff in integrating market data with internal data generated by finance, marketing, and other relevant departments.
  • Appropriately communicate parameters, assumptions, and details related to the data and analysis conducted.
  • Keep manager apprised of progress and status of all projects. Consistently meet deliverable deadlines.

Database Management

  • Effectively use software programs (Access, Microsoft SQL) designed to extract, manipulate, compile, and organize internal and external information.
  • Develop and apply knowledge of other databases, both internal and external to Duke (e.g. Truven, Sg2)

Ad-Hoc Reporting

  • Receive and track project requests; review and clarify with clients, as needed.
  • Identify necessary data to be collected and run database reports for specific requests about the market and service area.
  • Assist Duke Health entities and staff in developing ad-hoc reports aimed at extracting the relevant data needed by the end user.
  • Effectively analyze and interpret the data/information to garner key insights and present the information in a clear, concise, and polished manner. 
  • Keep manager apprised of progress and status of all projects. Consistently meet deliverable deadlines. 
  • Appropriately manage repository of historical requests, data pulls, and deliverables.

Strategy and Business Plan Development

  • Receive and track strategy and business plan requests
  • Participate in planning meetings to assist in the development of Duke Health strategic plans and business cases.
  • Act as primary support to Duke Health entities in accessing relevant data sources necessary to develop strategic plans and business cases.
  • Identify necessary data to be collected. Effectively analyze the information to garner key insights and develop recommendations.
  • Appropriately integrate internal data generated by finance, facility planning, and other relevant departments, as appropriate.
  • Develop polished, written business plans to support the Duke Health strategic goals, critically assessing the needs of each individual plan and providing content that is uniquely positioned to address the specific question and/or topic.
  • Keep manager apprised of progress and status of all projects. Consistently meet deliverable deadlines. 
  • Appropriately manage repository of historical plans, data pulls, and deliverables.

Additional Duties

  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
  • Monitor local, regional, and national trends. Support market research functions in support of planning initiatives.
  • Collaborate and communicate with other members of the department to ensure effective and efficient completion of projects and for purposes of problem solving and on-the-job training.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience drafting written materials for executive leadership and/or regulatory stakeholders is very strongly preferred. 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft business package to include PowerPoint, Access, Word, and Excel. Tableau and SQL preferred, but not required.
  • Working knowledge of PC and/or web-based software programs for database support and management
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail; ability to produce polished deliverables
  • Ability to appropriately read data and communicate meaningful insights

Bachelors degree in a business, healthcare, or quantitative field required.
Masters degree preferred.
