The Enhanced Composites and Structures Centre is looking for a Research Fellow or Research Assistant who will carry out research on the formulation, assessment and implementation of medical adhesives appropriate for integration with surgical meshes.

With its advanced materials processing, design and manufacturing capability, the pioneering Enhanced Composites and Structures Centre is an established partner to manufacturers and the members of their supply chains through research, consultancy and short courses. The Centre has established a leading reputation specialising in polymer composites manufacturing, polymeric matrix materials, nanocomposites, process simulation and optimisation, thermosetting cure modelling and hybrid composite-metallic joining techniques. The Centre includes the Cranfield Composites Manufacturing Laboratory, which focuses on the investigation and development of novel processing technology for lightweight structures and has expertise and capability to undertake many of the processes associated with advanced composites manufacturing including but not limited to autoclaving, resin transfer moulding, resin infusion, press-moulding, tufting and z-pinning. The facilities of the Centre include a full thermal and thermomechanical analysis suite and mechanical testing equipment with capabilities over a wide range of loading conditions.
The Centre is looking for a Research Fellow or Research Assistant who will carry out research on the formulation, assessment and implementation of medical adhesives appropriate for integration with surgical meshes. The work involves the development of novel adhesive blends with controllable behaviour under prescribed environmental (temperature, humidity conditions), their integration in a system comprising the adhesive and the mesh in a configuration allowing optimal deployment during surgical operations and the evaluation of operational and functional performance. The post holder will work closely with project partners form Cambridge University Hospitals, present the outcomes of their research in project meetings and prepare deliverable reports and journal publications.
At research assistant level, the successful candidate will have an MSc/Degree in Mechanical , Aeronautics or Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry or similar field (for Research Assistant). At Research Fellow level you will be expected to have a PhD (or near completion) in Materials, Manufacturing, Polymers or similar field and experience of working with polymers and the assessment of material performance through mechanical testing.
