The successful applicant will be part of a dynamic team of chemists working under the supervision of Professor Andrew Abell as part of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Nanoscale BioPhotonics (CNBP, see http://cnbp.org.au) in conjunction with the Department of Chemistry at the University of Adelaide. The Department of Chemistry is part of the School of Physical Sciences within the Faculty of Sciences (see https://sciences.adelaide.edu.au/) and brings together internationally recognised contemporary research across a range of areas including chemical biology and materials science.
The CNBP pursues fundamental science at the interface of chemistry, biology and photonics to probe complex and dynamic nano-environments within living organisms. We use light and other switching mechanisms to interrogate nanoscale domains to provide unprecedentedly localised measurements and sensing. One can then begin to understand how single cells react to and communicate with, their surroundings. This science underpins a new generation of devices capable of probing the response of cells within individuals to environmental conditions or treatment, creating innovative and powerful new sensing platforms.
The Faculty of Sciences is one of five faculties at the University of Adelaide. As the first university in Australia to grant degrees in science (1882), science has long been at the cornerstone of the institution and this continues today. As a research and education leader in fields such as agriculture, food & wine, animal & veterinary sciences, biological sciences, and physical sciences, the Faculty offers an exciting and innovative work environment.
Salary: (Level A) $82,246 to $91,425 per annum.
Superannuation: An employer contribution of 9.5% will apply
Term of position: This fixed-term contract is available from January 2019 for a period of two years.
To be successful you should have:
- PhD or equivalent degree in related relevant area of chemistry (or thesis submitted)
- Demonstrated experience in organic synthesis and characterisation of small molecules e.g. peptidomimetics, natural products and biosensing molecules
- Demonstrated publication track record in leading scientific journals and conferences
- Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research in addition to working effectively as a member of a research team
- Good verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
- Ability and willingness to work and communicate across disciplines
