The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) seeks to appoint a distinguished academic as Head of School of Economics. The School has more than 60 academic staff conducting world-class research across all major fields of economics and providing innovative teaching into a variety of programs, with the Economics major attracting a diverse cohort of students from across the University. To be suitable for the position, the appointee will have a substantial record of high-quality research and demonstrated expertise in teaching, learning and administrative leadership.
The School of Economics has recently gone through a successful period of renewal and development and produces influential research in many areas of applied and theoretical economics. We also place a strong emphasis on rigorous and effective teaching to many of the most talented students studying in Australia. Our alumni include leaders in policy, industry and society more broadly. The appointed Head of School will have the opportunity to drive the future direction of the School so as to build on its strengths and reinforce the University’s global reputation in social sciences.
The Head of School provides leadership and support for the School’s teaching and research activities and is responsible for its general management, including its staff, finances, and physical resources. As a member of the senior management team of FASS, the Head of School contributes to the overall Faculty strategy, with responsibility for setting, communicating and achieving Faculty academic and operational goals and strategies at the School level. Crucially, the appointee will help entrench the ambitious research and teaching standards necessary for appointment, confirmation (tenure) and promotion of academic staff, consistence with world-class performance.
The successful candidate will have a track record of effective leadership and management within the higher education sector. The candidate will demonstrate the capacity to think strategically, provide leadership and vision, oversee the development and implementation of strategy and have high-level management skills including effective budget management, professional stakeholder engagement and HR experience. In addition, he or she will demonstrate excellent interpersonal and team building skills.
Term and remuneration
The initial appointment will be for 5 years with the opportunity for renewal, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation and confirmation period for new appointees. The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package, will hold the title of Professor, and will have a substantive continuing position in a relevant department.
