The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is seeking to appoint a new Head to lead the School of Languages and Applied Linguistics.
As Head of School you will be responsible for leading and managing the academic business of the School in relation to both strategic and operational matters. As a member of the Faculty Executive, you will contribute to the development of Faculty strategy, and implement this at School level. Supported by senior colleagues, you will have responsibilities for line management, and staff development, and departmental budgetary matters. Collegial, approachable, and visible, you will work closely with the Dean, Faculty Executive, and other senior staff to provide decisive leadership.
The successful candidate may, if s/he meets the University’s criteria, be appointed to a Professorship. A Professorship will be offered on an open ended (permanent) basis for candidates who already hold a Chair or who meet the University’s criteria for promotion to a Chair; the intention is that the role holder will act as Head of School for an initial term of five years, with the possibility of extension for a further term. After that time, the role holder will become a member of the professoriate within the School and carry out the duties of the full professorial role profile. A substantive academic role as a Reader/Principal/Senior Lecturer will be offered if the appointed head does not meet the Chair criteria.
The University’s criteria for promotion to Professor are available here.
