The Department of Psychology and Sport Sciences, located within the School of Life and Medical Sciences, is a large department of approximately 90 staff, with close to 1,250 students on undergraduate, taught postgraduate and doctoral programmes. The educational and research activities of the School are diverse and wide-ranging, covering a broad range of science and clinical disciplines.

We currently have an opportunity for an inspirational researcher with international distinction in their field in any discipline within Psychology or Sport Sciences, who will strengthen existing activity and provide motivational leadership to a vibrant, energised academic community. The Head of Department will form part of the Senior Executive Team of the School.

The successful applicant will be educated to postgraduate degree level, have a proven record of outstanding research evidenced by high quality peer reviewed publications, income generation and a strong profile for REF 2021. The applicant will also have demonstrable experience of high-quality teaching, the management of a large and multi-disciplinary team of staff and of building relationships internally and externally.

The Head of Department will have overall strategic management of the Department, its finance and business planning, promotion of excellence in teaching, research, and business engagement. The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate expertise in nurturing a vibrant academic environment conducive to an excellent student experience and staff workplace environment. The Head of Department is expected to be an active member of a relevant learned society and maintain a high profile in their discipline.

The Appointment Panel for the post will be constituted in such a way that if the successful candidate fulfils the University's Professorial criteria, then the Panel may award a Professorial title to the successful candidate.
