Associate Director of Development
Reporting to the director of development, the associate director of development is responsible for developing and managing relationships with donors and potential donors on behalf of Stanford and the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences, including creating strategies that ultimately result in securing and stewarding 6-figure gifts. The majority of the associate director’s portfolio is focused on individual donors, primarily including alumni. He/she may also work with corporate and foundation supporters and may be asked to manage volunteer groups. He/she will have a 5+ year progressive career in direct fundraising at an institution or organization with the complexity of Stanford University or an equivalently complex environment outside of higher education. This person must thrive in an individual contributor role and be self reliant as well as be a strong team collaborator, with an ability to deal well with ambiguity and change.
The associate director will join a team focused on providing the necessary resources to further enable the school’s vision as a world leader in earth and environmental sciences and engineering to create, integrate, and transform fundamental understanding of earth processes, and use that knowledge to help provide energy, water, and a safe and sustainable planet. He/she will interact frequently with faculty and should have an interest in and aptitude for understanding the school’s work and impact.
This position will be on Stanford's main campus in Palo Alto, CA.
*Responsibilities of this position may include:
- The associate director will work to enhance and develop relationships that will lead to gifts in the 6-figure range. They will work with School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences undergraduate and graduate alumni, and friends, corporate and foundation donors and prospects.
- They will be expected to gain familiarity with the subject matter and our key stakeholders and develop comprehensive fundraising strategies for each group of assigned prospects. In addition he/she will be responsible for a wide range of fundraising activities including, but not limited to the following:
- Identifying new prospective donors and volunteers; maintaining an active schedule of contacts, activities, and solicitations with individuals, organizations, and corporations.
- Providing stewardship and involvement for Stanford’s generous supporters, corporations, and foundation representatives.
- Providing staff support for the Dean, faculty, and high-level volunteers and executive champions.
- Maintaining an active, current body of knowledge relative to the subject areas and Stanford’s interdisciplinary activities relevant to earth, energy, and environmental sciences.

Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in prospect identification, relationship building, and solicitation.
- Demonstrated experience mentoring and working with volunteers, faculty, and staff.
- Superior written and oral communication skills, with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to articulate a compelling case for philanthropic support programs.
- Ability to translate complex concepts into compelling development proposals.
- May require working flexible hours, including nights and weekends. Regular travel may be required.
- Valid passport for international travel.
- Valid California Non-commercial Class Driver's License.

The Stanford School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences (SE3) develops the knowledge and talent to understand the workings of the planet and to help solve resource and environmental challenges.
