The Center for American Indian Health (CAIH) is located administratively within International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The core activities housed at CAIH include research and service programs focused on reducing infectious diseases and behavioral and mental health problems, and promoting education and wellness.
The goals of the behavioral and mental health prevention projects are to co-design and/or implement culturally relevant interventions and evaluate the impact on improving health and sometimes educational outcomes for Native American children, families and communities.
The over-arching goal is to develop successful data-driven and culturally-informed surveillance and intervention programs for Tribal and other communities in which at-risk behavior threatens the well-being of children, youth and their families and limits their opportunities to flourish and lead healthy lives.
The Research Program Assistant II is based in Whiteriver, AZ.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Serve as a Research Program Assistant II for behavioral and mental health projects in Whiteriver, AZ.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
- Establish and communicate regularly with a Community Advisory Board (CAB) to guide intervention and study development.
- Liaise, plan and attend meetings, and carry out relevant activities with key stakeholders.
- Conduct interviews with youth, caregivers, program providers, community members, tribal leaders and other participants in the hub to assess feasibility and acceptability program activities.
- Assist with annual presentations to key tribal leadership and community stakeholders.
- Help disseminate tribally approved findings through annual reports, at national conferences and in the scientific literature
- Recruit eligible study participants and administer informed consent.
- Provide referrals to appropriate community resources.
- Provide transportation for eligible participants.
- Travel to and conduct school or home-based lessons.
- Collect data from participants, which may include some or all of the following: interview data; self-report data; observational data in the home; health specimen collections.
- Review data for document accuracy and processing as needed.
- Work with the rest of project team on duties related to the general conduct of the program and evaluation and participate in staff meetings to review project goals and progress.
- Attend field-based trainings and meetings (travel required).
- Update program logs and maintain up-to-date data entry records as needed.
- Assist with the other Center-wide programmatic duties as needed.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED (required). Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Two years related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
- Apache language speaker (preferred)

- Ability to travel as needed, including overnight trips for extended periods of time.
- Valid driver’s license issued by the state of residence with a good driving record.
- Some flexibility is required to ensure that evening and weekend work is completed for some projects.
- This position will maintain background clearance as required by the employer and any collaborating agencies.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
