Research Assistant MS
Provides general and specific research support for a Chemical Biology laboratory involved in the investigation of drug development. Under the supervision of a Principal Investigator and higher-level staff, assists in the daily operations and laboratory procedures performed in the laboratory.
Essential duties include but are not limited to: 1) Maintaining laboratory inventory of supplies, reagents, and equipment. Ordering supplies for laboratory personnel. Shipping/receiving of specialized laboratory reagents to/from other labs. Assisting in minor clerical tasks associated with research projects. Performing additional responsibilities incidental to laboratory activities. 2) Maintaining laboratory compliance with biological, chemical and radiation safety regulations. Supervising the storage and disposal of hazardous wastes and ensuring its compliance with regulations. Ensuring laboratory bio-safety and other pertinent procedures and protocols are up to date. 3) Overseeing the maintenance of a Mexican salamander colony; feeding, breeding, and cleaning animal containers, and maintaining associated records to ensure compliance with IACUC and YARC regulations. 4) Assisting with simple procedures involving salamanders, i.e. pre- and post-surgical care and associated record keeping. 5) Assisting with molecular biology techniques related to laboratory research projects including PCR, molecular cloning, RNA/DNA isolation, in situ hybridization, histology -ups. 6) Interacting with external vendors, equipment maintenance crew, IACUC and YARC, as well as internal EHS personnel as lab contact person. Attending weekly laboratory meetings.
1. Researches and collects data through complex laboratory/ scientific experiments, techniques, and procedures; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for designated research assignments. 2. Records and compiles information related to research data. Codes data accordingly to research specifications. Uses a computer terminal to input and retrieve data and to generate reports. Processes and summarizes data using scientific or statistical techniques. 3. Assists in data interpretation and analyses. Reports on status of research activities. Sets up, operates and maintains laboratory equipment and apparatus. 4. Formulates and prepares scientific solutions and media. Recruits study participants. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. 5. May assist in designing, developing, and modifying research experiments, procedures, or survey instruments. May oversee and instruct research staff. 6. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities.
Required Education and Experience
Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
