PhD position in Advanced Solid-State Welding of Aluminium Alloys: Industrialization and Applications of the Hybrid Metal Extrusion & Bonding Process (HYB)
With the advent of novel production technologies such as additive manufacturing, new opportunities emerge in product design, which may lead to unpredicted material behaviour and poor compliance. The theme of this PhD is to develop understanding of crack propagation in additively manufactured aluminium alloys. Special emphasis will be put on technology induced surface quality that effects crack initiation and growth. Film deposition technology will help to understand and mitigate such effects.
The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in [subject area] or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant
The applicant must have a MSc (or equivalent) in industrial or mechanical engineering and a documented background in fracture and fatigue of weldments with emphasis on welded aluminium joints. It is strongly preferred that the candidate already has some experience with testing of conventional MIG welds and at the same time is fully updated on the corresponding properties achieved using advanced solid state joining techniques such as FSW and HYB. The applicant has to prove capabilities in performing static and fatigue tests in the lab with high degree of independence, and advanced skills in using Finite Element Codes for fatigue assessment. The candidate should also have experience in performing standard metallurgical analysis of weldments, including optical microscopy, SEM analysis and microhardness testing.
The successful candidate should be creative, with a strong ability to work problem oriented. He/she should also enjoy interdisciplinary research and take keen interest in learning and working in teams. Proficiency to systematically carry out goal-oriented work, in combination with good skills to deliver oral and written presentation of research results, along with good collaborative capabilities will be emphasized. Excellent English skills—written and oral—are required.

Salary and conditions
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 449 400 per annum before tax. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact are qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months after commencement of the position.
