Dean of Education
The Inner Temple
Dean of Education
The Honourable Society of the Inner Temple is one of the four Inns of Court, which are the professional associations for barristers in England and Wales. Dating back to the 14th Century, Inner Temple provides an intensive training programme for students, pupils and new practitioners; CPD for established barristers; and accommodation and facilities. Central to the community’s values is ensuring that becoming a barrister is an achievable aspiration for all those capable of excellence, as is the promotion of ethics and integrity in the work and behaviour of barristers.
The part-time post of Dean of Education has been newly created in response to the recent report from the Inner Temple’s 2022 Working Group. Radical in approach, it identifies the requirements and challenges that will be faced by “the barrister of the future” and seeks to develop a framework within which the Inner Temple can deliver this vision. A first-class legal academic is sought to lead this exciting and transformative programme at a time when legal training is fast evolving.
A passion for legal education is a critical aspect of this role. As Bar training evolves, there will be considerable scope for exploring emergent technologies and models of teaching in order to create outstanding educational products that are accessible and inclusive. An ability to engage with legal practitioners at all stages of their career will be required and there will be many opportunities for such interaction. Equally, an interest in integrating ethics into legal education is essential.
The unique nature of this post lends itself to a range of different models, and the Inner Temple is interested in how legal academics may envisage approaching the post in light of research and other commitments.
