General Summary/Purpose:

The Johns Hopkins School of Education has just launched a new unit, the IDEALS Institute, focused on promoting high-quality early learning, developmentally appropriate care across the life-span, and impactful educational practices.  This new unit is spinning-off from its previous affiliation with an existing multi-million-dollar portfolio of work to better position its expanding growth and impact in the field.  This unit is seeking an experienced Lead Visual Design Producer to establish and execute the visual identity of the new unit, and to lead the production of several visual and graphic design projects for with the Institute is responsible.  The position reports directly to the Director of Marketing and Communications.    

The Lead Visual Design Producer has responsibility for visual storytelling across a range of mediums.  From traditional print pieces, to multi-media, to web, to digital tools, to marketing and training materials, the Lead Visual Design Producer applies design expertise and a creative eye to the production of visual content that successfully promotes the IDEALS Institute and its related projects’ brand.  We are looking for a communications artist whose palette includes static and animated imagery, who can capture an audience by bringing to life nuanced stories, policies, practices, and calls-to-action about the latest discoveries in child care and development in unique, quirky, and surprising ways.

The Lead Visual Design Producer will work across multiple project teams, spanning production on direct mailers and publications to creating the front-end user-interface for high-traffic volume websites and digital tools.  The Lead Visual Design Producer will coordinate multiple internal and external designers’ efforts to ensure alignment and consistency in branding and messaging.  Initially, this position will direct the efforts but not manage the personnel, though the position is expected to grow into a direct personnel supervisory role as more projects necessitate additional hires. 

The Producer is a team player who must work independently to simultaneously manage multiple Visual production projects from start to finish, often on tight deadlines. This includes: client consultation, needs assessment and metrics for success, development of concepts, treatments, and storyboards, drafting, leading internal and external stakeholders through the design process, producing, and editing of the final product.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Graphic Design Production

  • Strategize to create logo concepts.
  • Implement logo concepts into production logos across materials such as websites, templates, training items, and print.
  • Conceptualize engaging and illustrative info-graphics for training sites, presentations, brochures and reports.
  • Design various website elements, including: attractive banners, splash images, prominent buttons, menus, and icons.
  • Source images (stock photos and video footage).

User Design Experience Production

  • Conceptualize and design engaging and instructional front-end user experience of websites and web/mobile applications.
  • Establish the look and feel for various interfaces, including websites, web applications, and mobile applications.
  • Design front-end layout of websites based on client requirements utilizing best practices.
  • Design user-centered interaction models, visual wire-frames or screen mock-ups.

Marketing Materials

  • Design various marketing materials for center projects and programs, including: flyers, brochures, promotional items, booklets, conference handouts, signage, and posters.
  • Create email marketing items, presentation materials and interactive event materials.

Presentations Production

  • Create vibrant, informative and engaging presentations for various audiences.


  • Review materials created by others for standards and brand alignment.
  • Collaborate with technology team to solve complex issues, like interaction models and data visualization.


  • Visualize and design event layouts for a welcoming and engaging user experience for events.
  • Create and organize production assets.
  • Resize assets for different devices — tablet, mobile and web.
  • Work with a component library.
  • Juggle multiple projects simultaneously while effectively managing timelines and expectations.

Multi-Media Design Production

  • Conceptualize and design engaging and instructional multi-media assets from animation to video.
  • Develop original characters, imagery, and iconography to be used in production.
  • Develop storyboards and mood palettes for review by sponsors/SMEs, and make recommendations for a given aesthetic style based on 508 knowledge, brand guidelines, and overall graphic expertise.
  • Provide onsite visual direction for film shoots.


  • Create and maintain visual style guides, and ensure adherence to those by other internal and external producers.
  • Establish relationship with printers and manufacturers to be able to source materials quickly.
  • Oversee the efforts of other indirect, direct, and contractual producers to ensure alignment and delivery of assets in accordance with style guides and grant/contract terms.
  • Implement a visual review and sign off process to ensure delivery of items within timelines.
  • Create an asset library for application within multiple projects/publications.
  • Develop a prototype process using 3D printing prior to mass production.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree in fine arts, graphic design, or related field.
  • Four years experience and a portfolio.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Understanding of web design issues, including browser usability and cross-platform compatibility
  • Responsive design
  • Strong design and troubleshooting skills, as well as an eye for detail
  • At least 1-2 years’ experience
  • A solid foundation in typography, layout and design
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Experience with transitions and dynamic interaction
  • Excellent visual, written and verbal communication skills, along with presentation and negotiation skills
  • A penchant for details and organization, including the ability to prioritize tasks, communicate progress and meet deadlines
  • The ability to effectively take direction and work both collaboratively and autonomously
  • Must want to make a difference and be cause oriented!

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
