Independent Contractor opportunity based in Delhi

The Australia India Institute Delhi Private (Aii@Delhi) is a subsidiary company of the University of Melbourne established in 2015 to represent the Australia India Institute in India.

After terms as foundation director of both the Australia India Institute and the Australia India Institute @ Delhi, Professor Amitabh Mattoo is stepping down from his leadership role to focus on teaching and scholarship at JNU and Melbourne University.  As a result Aii Delhi Private Limited is seeking to appoint a new Director of the Aii@Delhi to build on his legacy in developing India-Australia relations and to drive the next stage in the development of the Aii@Delhi.

The Director will be responsible for formulating the Aii@Delhi’s strategy in consultation with the Director and CEO of the Australia India Institute. They will also manage a small team of professional staff at the Aii@Delhi’s headquarters in Delhi.

In addition, the Director will be responsible for developing a coordinated program of work for the University of Melbourne in relation to support for academic programs and research in India and across the India-Australia boundary. They will also liaise closely with the Australian Government Department of Education and Training to prosecute research and engagement projects associated with DET’s contract with the Aii in partnership with the Aii in Australia and relevant organisations in India such as the Australian High Commission. In this capacity, it is expected that the Director will show thought leadership with respect to understanding modern India and the Australia and India relationship; support faculty and students from the University of Melbourne and other Australian universities in their research and teaching; and develop partnerships with academic institutions in India.

The Director will seek to enhance the profile of the Aii and Aii@Delhi to government, business and the community; participate in the Aii’s engagement across multiple sectors; and assist from time to time in fundraising for the Institute.

The Director will report to the Director and CEO of the Australia India Institute in terms of day-today management and to the Aii@Delhi Board of Directors on governance matters.

The Director will be engaged up until 31 December 2020 as an independent contractor, connected to the University of Melbourne, and will be based primarily at Aii@Delhi.
