Senior Researcher in Renal Vascular Biology
Karolinska Institutet, The Department of Medicine, Huddinge
This fulltime position is placed in the Integrated Cardio Metabolic Centre (ICMC) in the Department of Medicine, Huddinge. The department has a strong international profile and a wide range of scopes. The central scientific interest of Professor Christer Betsholtz research group is to understand organ/tissue-specific vascular functions at the molecular and cellular level, with the ultimate goal of understanding how these functions underlie, contribute to, or are affected by, disease processes in ways that can be therapeutically targeted to cure, block or slow progression of disease.
A senior researcher position is now open for a highly motivated scientist with a strong background in research conducted on renal physiology, molecular and cell biology, angiogenesis and vascular biology. The successful candidate will be responsible for executing leading edge research work, aiming at unraveling deep cellular and molecular characteristics of vascular cells primarily from kidney tissue, employing single cell RNA-sequencing, eventually leading to a better definition of cell types and their function during physiological as well as pathological circumstances.
The position will be funded for 18 months.
The hands-on work includes work with transgenic animal models, the generation, analysis and interpretation of single cell RNA-sequencing data from mouse tissues, as well as tissue analysis employing various histological and immunohistochemical and biochemical methods. In particular experience in models of diabetes and fibrosis is a strong merit.
Additionally, writing reports and scientific articles, participation in national and international scientific meetings, applying for further external research funds, will be expected form the successful candidate, as is taking up teaching responsibilities, giving lectures as well as supervision of graduate students and post-doctoral researchers. Previous grants received in competition are a merit.
This position involves extensive national and international collaborations, as well as collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry, thus, prior experience in such collaborative projects is highly valuable.
A person is eligible to be appointed Senior Researcher if she or he has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence, as well as documented research after publicly defending his or her doctoral thesis corresponding to qualification as Senior Researcher. The applicant must have postdoctoral experience for more than seven years from laboratory/laboratories that are internationally recognized.
Bases of assessment
The applicant is expected to hold a PhD, or equivalent, and is expected to be able show productivity and cooperative skills by shared co-authorship with different research groups. Applicants are expected to have co-authored more than 18 papers and be first and/or corresponding author on at least 8 papers where the applicant has had a leading role in the writing process. The applicant is expected to have a strong research experience in renal physiology and vascular biology. Previous expert knowledge on the VEGF/Angiopoietin signaling pathways is a strong merit. Experience in the generation, analysis and interpretation of single cell RNA-sequencing data is a strong merit. Furthermore, the applicant must hold a certificate for laboratory animal work (FELASA C or equivalent) and be highly experienced in working with and maintenance of transgenic mouse lines, especially the Cre/loxP system, reporter lines and metabolic disease models, with emphasis on vascular cells. Solid background knowledge about the Swedish legislations and regulations for experimental animal work is an advantage. Excellent speaking and writing in English is mandatory.
We stress research expertise and experience when assessing the applicants.
Skills and personal qualities
The applicant must speak and write fluent English, and skills in spoken and written Swedish are a merit. The applicant must demonstrate excellent communication and coordination/collaboration skills, documented by successful (inter)national collaborations and having presented research findings at international meetings. The applicant must have a strong problem-solving analytical ability as well as being independent and well structured. We stress scientific experience when evaluating applicants and the applicant’s personal skills will be highly valuable.
An application must contain the following documents in English: Curriculum vitae, qualifications and description of planned research, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet’s qualifications portfolio (http://ki.se/qualificationsportfolio).
The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
