General Summary/Purpose

We are looking for a experienced, diligent, reliable, independent and friendly individual as a full-time Sr. Research Specialist to help direct a measles project. Our lab is focused on understanding the pathogenesis of viral infections. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing samples, developing and performing immunologic and virologic assays, interpreting data and co-authoring publications for studies of measles virus infection in cell culture and in rhesus macaques.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

The required tasks will include reagent preparation, re-stocking of supplies, operation of laboratory equipment, development of new assays, collaboration with the PI and other members of the laboratory to identify appropriate experimental approaches and participation in manuscript preparation. The assays the successful candidate will perform will include isolation and sorting of peripheral blood mononuclear cells, cell culture, ELISA, flow cytometry, virus infection of cells, virus quantification and RT-PCR. Candidate will be expected to develop, design and manage substantial research projects, coordinates own objectives. The ability to enhance problem solving through interactions and discussions with collaborators or senior researchers at meetings and or professional presentations is expected. In addition, providing work direction to other lab personnel, including recommendations for hire/fire, and evaluation of performance may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with co-authoring manuscript(s). Master's degree, with related graduate research.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum qualifications (mandatory): Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field and 4 years’ experience in a comparable laboratory performing tissue culture techniques required for virologic and immunologic assays.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Tissue culture, cell isolation, assays for virus replication and immune function.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
