The Sr. Programmer Analyst will be responsible for the creation, implementation, maintenance, performance, production support and documentation of various departmental and enterprise-wide  application systems. This includes but is not limited to the installation, modification, and testing of new and/or upgraded applications (packages or home grown), operating systems, file structures, hardware, communication devices, and productivity tools. Applies analysis techniques and procedures to gather and then translate business requirements into functional/technical specifications and designs.  Using functional specifications and designs, produces all or part of the deliverables. Maintains databases and application system code.

This position is responsible for requirements gathering, data provisioning, data analytics, end user training, and data quality monitoring related to the Precision Medicine Analytic Platform, supporting clinical research projects.

This position requires a significant level of collaboration with the clinical research community, involving application of analysis techniques to gather and translate business requirements into functional and technical specifications and designs. This position also requires knowledge of HIPAA privacy policies related to Human Subjects Research to review IRB-approved protocols to ensure compliance. Will prepare supporting documentation to facilitate use of the PMAP system, as well as deliver in-person and online training materials to PMAP researchers. Will provide feedback to the PMAP development team based on end user acceptance testing and production usage. Will perform data analysis and interpretation, utilizing knowledge of statistics and quantitative analysis. Will conduct basic statistical analysis for studies with various research designs. Make suggestions or provide solutions to problems related to data management and statistical analysis.

The position will use JIRA to document and track assignments. Data must be delivered and analyzed in a secure manner, following all applicable institutional policies and State and Federal regulations for privacy, security, and the conduct of human subject research.

The role will also utilize the PMAP Configuration Services tool to create data projections within the PMAP environment based on IRB approval and researcher requirements, and assist researchers in analyzing this data using tools such as Python, Jupyter Notebook, Stata, SAS or R Studio. The major systems with which the position interfaces are:  Epic, EPR2020, and DataMart/CaseMix.

This position could work with about one hundred different users annually, primarily from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, but also from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, Nursing, and the Engineering Program at the Homewood Campus.   The position will require some travel to the Johns Hopkins Hospital and possibly to other locations in Baltimore in order to meet with customers.  The most complex part of this job is learning about the nuances of the data in large institutional databases, with data for about 5.4 million patients.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Service-oriented with excellent verbal and written communication and organization skills; experience with delivering training to a diverse population of users; comprehensive understanding of business requirements gathering and analysis; understanding of change control/change management and the implications of technology solutions.
  • Must be able to work closely with customers and understand and translate their functional needs into technical requirements.
  • Experience in delivering effective technology solutions in a higher education environment or in the technology supported or enabled delivery of education is required.
  • Basic experience using Microsoft SQL Server to extract data for quality control purposes and experience with quality assurance testing, data analytics, preparing high-quality training materials, and delivering training and assistance as needed to support the PMAP research community.
  • Experience with analytical and statistical applications such as SAS, R Studio, and Python.


  • Bachelor’s degree required and three  years of related work experience with computer systems and applications.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience.

JHU Equivalency Formula:

30 undergraduate degree credits or 18 graduate degree credits = 1 year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college coursework may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.


Experience with clinical data, particularly with mining data from one or more of the following systems:  Epic, EPR2020, Sunrise Clinical Manager, DataMart/CaseMix and experience with Jupyter Notebook and Tableau highly desired.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
