The University of Portsmouth is one of the UK’s most successful modern universities, ranked within the top 500 of universities in the world by Times Higher Education and in the top 25 UK universities by the Guardian University Guide 2019. The research culture is strong with over 60% of Portsmouth's research submitted at the last REF rated as either ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’, whilst much of our impact was judged to be ‘outstanding’ with ‘very considerable reach’. Portsmouth has around 2,800 staff and 23,000 students including 4,000 from 150 countries around the globe.  The University is on a strong upwards trajectory as a TEF Gold institution with the National Student Survey 2018 placing Portsmouth in the top 20 of UK Universities with student satisfaction at 88%.

Following the appointment of the incumbent to a Vice-Chancellor’s position, the University is looking to appoint an exceptional individual to lead on research, innovation and business engagement.

The successful candidate will be an exceptional academic with a national and international research profile within any of the disciplines present at the University. This will be combined with outstanding leadership and people skills and the ability to take key decisions based on a clear vision, while promoting collaboration and achieving consensus. The successful candidate will be expected to further develop the existing strong research and innovation culture, building on the excellence demonstrated in the last REF exercise. This will involve facilitating further growth in staff engagement with research and innovation activities, including publication and income generation.  The PVC will play a leading role in developing and championing our research and innovation specialisms along with our newly established cross-disciplinary thematic areas: Future and Emerging Technologies; Health and Wellbeing; Security and Risk; Sustainability and the Environment; Democratic Citizenship.

You will join the University’s Executive Board, reporting directly to the Vice-Chancellor. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in finalising the REF 2021 submission and will make a key contribution to the development of the new University 2020-25 strategy and lead the development of the supporting R&I strategy over the next 18 months.
