Proficient Sr.  Research Specialist with a sophisticated understanding of techniques and a solid foundation in the underlying science to work in the Radiopharmeceutical Therapy and Dosimetry (RTD) Lab in the Radiologial Physics Division, Department of Radiology. Works independently and manages daily research projects. Make intellectual contributions to scientific research interests of the lab. In collaboration with principal investigator, make research project decisions that may alter research objectives and direction. Co-authors peer-reviewed manuscripts and may contribute to writing grants. Applies independent thought to making decisions with the principal investigator. Develop, design and manage substantial research projects that support the overall mission of the lab, coordinates own objectives towards this end. Perform sophisticated data analysis utilizing extensive knowledge base and varied methods experience. In clinical lab, performs and develops clinical validation protocols. Will present at departmental/divisional meetings, and provides training to other individuals who may be assigned to the laboratory on a regular or temporary basis. Act as consultant to refine or adapt methodologies to fit research objectives. Collaborates in development of new technologies, protocols and uses of equipment. The senior research specialist will assist the principal investigator and other faculty in the lab in the development and coordination of specific research projects, experimentation, data collection and analysis, and organization of the laboratory.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Seeking an individual with experience in cell culture and standard molecular biology techniques as well as the ability to perform pre-clinical animal studies and maintain a transgenic mouse colony.
  • Performs clinical and/or research lab tests and experiments.
  • Follows, establishes and/or devises procedures and protocols and is expected to improve them as needed.
  • Will utilize appropriate technique to design and perform laboratory tests and/or experiments. Participates in planning experiments and evaluating/interpreting test results utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices.
  • Selects, develops, performs and evaluates research methods; operates appropriate equipment. Reports and records outcomes/results of all tests.
  • Exchanges routine information in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication.
  • Regular interaction with students, vendors, post-doctoral fellows, faculty members, and other clinical fellows, that may include training.
  • Monitors biohazard/radiation safety standards and proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace.
  • May be responsible for routine operational activities such as; ordering supplies and materials, reviewing inventory, maintaining up to date records of tests, etc. Preventative maintenance of equipment.
  • Monitors inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field. Four years’ experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques. Experience in tissue culture techniques, including transfection, ability to generate and maintain a stable cell line from tumor tissue explants, MTT cell kill assay, mycoplasma testing; familiarity with colony formation assay a plus.

Preferred qualifications:

Master’s degree preferred.

Special knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Ability to maintain a transgenic mouse or rat colony, perform genotyping
  • Ability to conduct pre-clinical drug and radiopharmaceutical studies, including, intraductal, IP, tail vein injections and oral gavage.
  • Knowledge and practice of the following:
  • Sub-cutaneous, left cardiac ventricle and mammary fat pad tumor cell inoculation
  • IHC staining
  • Flow cytometry
  • Immune-blotting, Southern and Northern blotting
  • RNA and DNA extraction, protein kinase assay, luciferase assay
  • Spheroid growth and soft agar assays, including migration and invasion
  • DNA cloning, point deletion, insertion mutagenesis and real-time quantitative PCR
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word; willing and able to maintain lab web site

Any specific physical requirements for the job:

Must be able to lift 25 lbs., Must be able to sit for long period of time, and must be able to climb at least 4 flights of stairs.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
