General Summary:

The assistant director supports the success of student athletes by meeting individually with students and working closely with academic advisors and coaches to enhance student’s academic experience.  In addition to working closely with the leadership in the Krieger and Whiting Schools Advising Centers and the Athletics Department, the assistant works with other university stakeholders to develop and implement innovative programs and services to engage student-athletes in events and services supporting students' academic and personal development.  The assistant director reports to the associate dean of the Center for Student Success (CSS) and collaborates with CSS staff on various projects and events throughout the year.  This is a full-time position with evening and weekend hours as needed.

Essential Functions:

Success Coaching

  • Provides individual, academically-oriented support and mentoring for Division I and III student athletes.  Meetings include helping students to develop academic goals and plans to achieve goals each month.  Sessions also include revision of plans- as needed, problem solving and connecting participants to helpful resources.
  • Provides counseling and goal-focused coaching services for individuals and groups in order to advise students on career-related opportunities such as internships, full-time employment, graduate school and other post baccalaureate positions.
  • Works with students to create and implement academic improvement plans for participants with semester and/or cumulative GPAs between 2.0 -2.4 GPA.
  • Monitors students’ academic performance via the HopReach early alert system and on-going contact with academic advisors and faculty.   
  • Works with the athletics department, coaches and other University staff (e.g. case managers, psychologists, academic advisors, etc.) to support students facing personal or academic challenges.
  • Coaches students on time-management, study skills, self-discipline and adjusting to university life. 
  • Identifies and support at-risk students, via individual meetings, program development and connecting them with appropriate support resources.

Collaboration and Partnerships

  • Enhances partnership with the department of Athletics by working closely with director and departmental leadership team, coaches and department staff. 
  • Maintains regular communication with coaches re: student athlete academic progress, issues or concerns.
  • Works closely with assistant deans of KSAS and WSE Advising Centers to support student athletes progress and address challenging academic issues. 
  • Partners with the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) to design and implement programs that enhance knowledge of diversity and community among student athletes.
  • Collaborates with the Career Center, Alumni Relations and faculty to coordinate professional and faculty networking events.
  • Monitors student athletes’ connection to and usage of Academic Support Services. Coordinates with that office the development of workshops and other small group sessions.
  • Establish strong partnerships with and engage student-athletes in planning collaborative programs and events between the CSS, Office of Athletics, KSAS and WSE. 
  • Works closely with professional staff to plan, implement and evaluate initiatives to enhance community and learning among student-athletes (faculty-student interaction programs, social programs, etc.).
  • Collaborate with academic advisors and staff from the Career Center, Alumni Relations, Study Abroad Programs, and Center for Social Concern to support existing or develop new experiential learning and professional development opportunities for student-athletes.
  • Collaborates with student athletes and/or related student organizations to develop and implement a strategy to support a robust virtual community of student-athletes via social media (Facebook, lnstagram, Twitter, etc.).

Advocacy

  • Serves as a spokesperson for student athletes and other populations served by the CSS. 
  • Educates colleagues re: issues of student athletes through participation on division and campus-wide committees.
  • Advocates for and supports the participation of student athletes in campus wide student initiatives and/or leadership positions.

Assessment

  • Coordinate assessment efforts including administering written surveys, conducting student focus groups, and reviewing relevant academic and/or retention data as appropriate.
  • Evaluates collaborative programs and events.  Compiles and analyze academic and program evaluation data; prepare and write reports. Suggest improvements for student success based on data and student feedback. Develops and implements a plan to assess progress in achieving program outcomes including administering written surveys, conducting student focus groups, and reviewing relevant academic and/or retention data.

Administrative

  • Manages budgets for collaborative programs, and peer academic coaches.  
  • Prepares semester and annual reports.
  • Creates, manages and distributes communications with student-athletes. Some communication efforts include meeting one-on-one, phone calls, social media, direct mailing, email campaigns and website updates.
  • Works with Homewood Student Affairs Web Content Manager to develop and maintain Center for Student Success office and related websites. 
  • Stays abreast of and applies best practices for promoting success of student athletes.
  • Supervises undergraduate student intern.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education: 

The position requires a master’s degree in counseling, psychology, social work, higher education, or related area.

Experience: 

At a minimum, qualified applicant must have 3 years of related experience. 2- 4 years of experience working with high achieving college students strongly preferred.  An understanding of best practices in providing academic support to college student athletes in a university setting. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain strong collaborative partnerships with campus colleagues.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Familiarity with the culture of college student athletics and implications for working with student athletes.
  • Knowledge of student retention research including issues of college student athletes.
  • In addition to being student centered and possessing knowledge of college student developmental stages/needs, the ideal candidate will have a demonstrated understanding of the mission of a complex, decentralized research university.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with students, faculty, parents, and public.
  • Strong collaborative and problem solving abilities.  
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, written, public speaking, and listening skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to successfully manage multiple priorities.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office, social media, website management and other online means of virtual communication.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds (e.g., class, race, nationality, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, etc.) and to foster sensitivity to diversity and an inclusive campus and community culture.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception.
