General Summary/Purpose:

The Senior Instructional Designer supports the mission of the Center for Educational Resources to partner with faculty to extend their instructional impact by connecting innovative pedagogical strategies and emerging digital technologies.  The Senior Instructional Designer leads work groups in developing instructional and educational technology programs/projects.   As a senior staff member, the Senior Instructional Designer serves on academic and technical committees within the library, on the Homewood campus, and occasionally at the institutional level and contributes to expansion of the institution's knowledge base for education, research, and information technology objectives. This includes conceptualizing and conducting pedagogical research as well as writing articles, managing CER’s blog, and presenting papers at professional conferences.  The Sr. Instruction Designer consults directly with instructors – faculty and graduate students – to improve their instructional impact by conducting classroom observations and assessing teaching performance.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manages the creation and implementation of instructional projects
    • Directs multiple project teams (faculty, programmers, web developers, graphic designers and illustrators, student assistants, external partners)
    • Develops new program plans and instructional framework using the Backward Design process and leveraging research-based educational strategies
    • Monitors project progress and evaluates results
    • Develops formative and summative evaluation plans in conjunction with assessment experts
    • Advises faculty teams on evidence-based teaching practices and effective use of instructional resources for specific projects
    • Initiates and writes proposals for foundation or donor support of projects
  • Advises instructors – faculty and graduate students – and administrators on pedagogical strategies and instructional technology resources
    • Consults with faculty, staff, and administration on teaching strategies and resources
    • Conducts classroom observations and assesses teaching quality
    • Conducts needs assessments
    • Provides critical evaluation of pedagogical strategies
    • Writes specifications and chooses appropriate technological solutions
    • Prototypes and tests digital environments
  • Instructs faculty, staff, and students in use of pedagogical strategies and instructional technology
    • Designs and teaches workshops on pedagogical and instructional technology topics
    • Delivers presentations on pedagogical strategies and educational technologies to faculty, staff, and administration
    • Creates paper and electronic documents that support instructional mission
  • Researches pedagogical strategies and educational technology resources used to support faculty
    • Works with CER’s Sr. Educational Research Consultant to research new instructional strategies
    • Contributes to educational research projects
    • Identifies, evaluates, and recommends hardware and software. Coordinates with CER budget administrator on purchases
  • Attends professional conferences, researches professional literature, and reports on relevance to Hopkins
    • Manages CER’s Innovator Instructor Blog
    • Presents at departmental faculty meetings
  • Represents the CER on University-wide committees and in public forums

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Three years of professional experience in the field of instructional design or educational technology including designing, developing, and facilitating instruction projects/programs, or related field required
  • Graduate degree in teaching, education, instructional design, instructional technology or related field required  
  • Will consider candidates with graduate degrees in liberal arts, science, or engineering if candidate also has extensive teaching experience
  • Significant additional related experience may substitute for advanced degree
  • Excellent project management skills, ability to set and fulfill priorities, independence, and time management capabilities—this job requires the person who holds it to be a self starter who sets goals for herself/himself and members of the teams s/he may lead, develops strategies for meeting them, and achieves them with minimal oversight
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate teams of high level professionals (including faculty and other technical specialists) from multiple departments and Schools in conceptualization, development, and execution of funded projects
  • Thorough knowledge of pedagogical theory and practice and emerging instructional technologies
  • Familiarity with course management systems, web development, and multimedia authoring tools
  • Working knowledge of multiple computer operating systems and platforms, including PCs and Macs
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
