Position Overview

The Associate Professor/ Senior Lecturer for General Practice & Rural Medicine provides leadership and direction to the General Practice education and training programs within the College of Medicine and Dentistry, engages directly with all key stakeholders including the communities and supervisors across the programs, and provides guidance in particular to the educational, evaluation and research aspects of the programs.

The incumbent supports students, registrars, medical educators and GP supervisors in meeting the training requirements of the undergraduate or vocational training programs and may contribute to the teaching and assessment across all Medicine programs.

The Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer for General Practice & Rural Medicine contributes to the continuing development of General Practice and Rural Medicine within the College of Medicine and Dentistry and promotes and participates in community and professional activities to build partnerships and increase resources for regionally based medical education and training.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Provide leadership and direction to the General Practice education and training programs within the College of Medicine and Dentistry across northern Australia.
  2. Work with general practice medical specialist colleges and other professional bodies, Health and Hospital Services, local general practitioners and GP practices and policy-makers to negotiate change, build alliances and increase resources for regionally-based clinical education and training pathways in generalist medicine.
  3. Contribute to the delivery of education to GP registrars through academic and professional staff of JCU in the distributed regional training nodes/teams across the region. Specifically support the delivery of education and assessment through Medical Educators and clinical academics across all sites.
  4. Contribute to ensuring that the curriculum and assessment requirements of the respective Colleges (RACGP and ACCRM) are met for each accredited training post and each registrar.
  5. Contribute to teaching and assessment of medicine students in patient-centred primary care.
  6. Engage with General Practitioners and their practices in north Queensland to encourage and recruit GP preceptors to take medicine students on placement.
  7. Contribute to the research activity of the College through personal and collaborative research and evaluation and the supervision of Honours students. Promote and build capacity in research relevant to rural and underserved populations.
  8. Support the University's commitment to the principles of reconciliation, which exemplify respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and the valuing of justice and equity for all Australians.

Generic Accountabilities

There are generic responsibilities that apply to all James Cook University staff.  

  1. The Associate Professor/ Senior Lecturer is required to observe the lawful and reasonable directions, policies and decisions of the University Council, understand and comply with the Enterprise Agreement, the Statutes and Rules of the University, the policies and decisions of the University Council and other appropriate University authorities, as in force from time to time.
  2. The Associate Professor/ Senior Lecturer is required to demonstrate a personal commitment to ensure personal safety and the safety of others and contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance. This includes the effective implementation and compliance with James Cook University WHS policies, procedures and safe systems of work, together with all relevant legislation, duties and obligations. Contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance. 
  3. The Associate Professor/ Senior Lecturer is required to exercise proper discretion in all matters affecting the well-being of the University which involve public writing or speaking in accordance with the University’s Code of Conduct.

Special Conditions

  • It is a requirement of this position to travel within North Western Queensland GP Training region and occasionally nationally. This may include overnight stays and after hours work.
  • It is a requirement of this position to hold a current ‘C’ class Queensland Drivers licence.

Selection Criteria 

Selection and appointments will be assessed against selection criteria.

Essential

  1. Current registration as a medical practitioner within Australia and Fellowship of a relevant Australian specialist medical college (RACGP or ACCRM).
  2. Demonstrated ability to shape strategic thinking, communicate with influence, negotiate persuasively and build alliances
  3. Strong record of teaching in the area of undergraduate and/or post graduate medical education.
  4. Demonstrated high level communication skills with experience in relating to a range of stakeholders, ability to write effectively and competency in the use of information and communication technology.
  5. Demonstrated experience of health service delivery and health professional education in underserved areas including remote locations and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health settings.

To be appointable at ACAD D level, the following criteria will also apply:

  1. Substantial clinical experience and demonstrated leadership in relevant clinical or academic settings.
  2. A record of research, publications and conference presentations with a national or international profile in a rural medicine research area.
  3. Demonstrated understanding of issues relevant to the provision of primary care and clinical services in rural and regional areas.
