Assistant Dean, Executive, Master's in Bussiness Administration
The Assistant Dean for the Executive MBA has overall responsibility for the MBA for Executives program and works to make it the best program of its kind in the world. Reporting to the Deputy Dean for Academic Programs, oversees program aspects including delivery/operations; innovation; marketing, recruiting & admissions; student services; and alumni engagement. The Assistant Dean catalyzes & facilitates collaboration among internal stakeholders & departments, including faculty, global initiatives, career development, media services, hospitality & communications, to create a seamless & transformational learning experience for participants centered on the school’s mission to educate leaders for business & society. The Assistant Dean advocates on behalf of the program & supports the school’s transition to a “portfolio model” in which key departments & functions adapt to serve multiple & diverse student populations & degree programs. Lead a team to identify, select & recruit diverse & purposeful students with great potential to become impactful leaders for business & society and deliver the best possible MBA for Executives program experience. Plan goals, activities, set policies & guidelines for SOM’s MBA for Executives with the Deputy Dean & Faculty Directors. With the Deputy Dean, represent the MBA for Executives with constituencies both internal & external to the University, including with potential candidates, employers & leading industry forums. Identify opportunities for program & process innovation through ongoing benchmarking with peer schools, scans of the leadership/executive development landscape & best practice identification across SOM and Yale. Leverage the MBA for Executive as a laboratory for innovation. Scan the offerings & activities of peer/competitor institutions & their executive-oriented programs, combine with knowledge of employers’ development needs to gain a clear understanding of industry environment, and make programmatic recommendations to keep SOM and its programs at the cutting edge. Work with school’s faculty leadership, Faculty Directors & Deputy Dean to identify appropriate faculty for the program & work with them to align expectations & support their effectiveness in the EMBA classroom. In collaboration with the Managing Director of Global Initiatives, develop & implement curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular program components that leverage the Global Network for Advanced Management. In collaboration with Director of Marketing & Admissions for the MBA for Executives, promote the MBA for Executives programs to appropriate audiences, present on the program to prospective students, conduct one-on-one sessions, participate in interviewing of candidates & chair the admissions committee for the program. In collaboration with the executive education department, CDO & alumni and development, cultivate relationships with companies and non-profits that might want to nominate candidates to the program. Allocate financial aid in coordination with the Director of Marketing and Admissions & Director of Financial Aid. Lead the implementation of the Commonwealth Fund Fellowship in Minority Health Leadership at Yale, a leadership development program for clinicians focused on minority health that is anchored on the EMBA program. Develop, implement & monitor the effectiveness of comprehensive plans to boost in particular the percentage of women, underrepresented minorities and veterans in the program. Prepare financial and operational reports & analyses reflecting progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions. Continuously identify approaches to improve quality and cost effectiveness. Responsible for revenue and expense budgets for all aspects of program.
- Directs, monitors, and assesses needs and directs the application of resources of an administrative University office dealing with one or more major functional areas.
- Directs and implements solutions to problems that are routine to complex in nature and that affect multiple functional areas of responsibility.
- Plans and/or participates in planning University activities on a long-term basis to comply with University goals and objectives.
- Establishes and implements consistent university-wide policies in multiple functional areas of responsibility.
- Ensures that University office policies and procedures are in compliance with federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
- Develops and monitors goals and objectives for managerial and professional staff in compliance with University strategies.
- Directs a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in related field and eight years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Demonstrable credibility with senior executives and strong business-to-business relationship capabilities.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Superior demonstrated written and oral communication and presentation skills; ability to craft and articulate messages for various audiences.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Keen understanding of current management education landscape and trends. Familiarity with current members of the Global Network for Advanced Management a plus. Ability to build and develop strong internal and external relationships.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Creative problem solver with the ability to offer innovative, consensus-building solutions. High-level analytical skills and ability to deploy resources efficiently and effectively.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Proven record of successfully developing and launching revenue-generating projects.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Master’s degree and at least 5 years of experience in the higher education sector, preferably in management education. MBA. Experience with online, hybrid, or technology-mediated education a plus. Global orientation; experience working across countries and regions, and fluency in more than one language.
