General summary/purpose:

This staff position involves assisting with the recruitment, scheduling, and complex, detailed tracking of subjects participating in one or more research projects. This position involves working directly with research subjects to screen them for eligibility, systematically conduct standardized psychophysical, electrophysical, behavioral, and psychological assessments and maintain records of testing. A variety of computer controlled laboratory sensory testing devices will be used including: thermal sensory analyzers, algometers, von frey filaments, cold water baths, etc. This position will also involve coordination with other staff to ensure these tests are conducted at specific timepoints. This position involves using this equipment to study human subjects 50% of the time.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Telephone screening candidates to determine eligibility of potential volunteers for a project.
  • Scheduling subjects for research visits and study procedures according to written protocol
  • Coordinate staff and resources required for study procedures
  • Explain study procedure to participants and obtaining informed consent
  • Use software to manage, track and report flow of subjects through protocols
  • Ensure completion of study measures and instruments
  • Check for accuracy and ensuring proper storage of data.
  • Ensure timely data entry. 
  • Work closely with data manager to assist in quality control procedures.
  • Responsible for recruitment of subjects and implementing recruitment procedures
  • Prepare summary reports for research meetings as scheduled.
  • Coordinate and notify study team members of study meetings and tasks needing completion
  • Perform administrative and clerical tasks as needed, including ordering supplies

A variety of computer controlled laboratory sensory testing devices will be used including: thermal sensory analyzers, algometers, von frey filaments, cold water baths, etc., as well asequipment related to blood draws includes IV lines, needles, vials, and various other processing equipment and supplies. This position involves using this equipment to study human subjects 50% of the time. The position also involves teaching subjects how to use a variety of study equipment used for ambulatory monitoring.

The position involves frequent/regular contact with research subjects and a variety of medical professionals both within Johns Hopkins and collaborating institutions. The position involves supervision of unpaid volunteers and part-time employees performing data entry. The position reports directly to the laboratory manager or study investigator.

Minimum qualifications:

High School Diploma/GED.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree. 2 year related experience preferably in research with prior research experience with human subjects strongly desired.
  • Successful candidates often have ambitions and ability for advanced graduate training in psychology or medicine and are comfortable or desiring experience in a fast-paced medical research setting. Position requires the flexible implementation of various test procedures in a variety of settings and locations per multiple approved research protocols.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 

30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Applicants must possess excellent interpersonal skills, be detail-oriented, and comfortable working closely with others. Background in behavioral sciences is desired, but not required.
  • This job requires a very high degree of independent action once fully trained. Successful candidates must be well organized and have excellent interpersonal skills and at least a college degree. Excellent computer skills are required. Candidates must be responsible, flexible, and open to learning new skills. Prior research experience is required.
  • At least 50% of this position involves directly using a personal computer and a variety of software packages.  This position requires excellent computer skills, knowledge, and experience with Microsoft office programs, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and Power Point.  Working knowledge of FileMaker database software, Qualtrics, and SSPS is a major plus. Successful applicants must demonstrate an aptitude for learning novel software programs used to conduct sensory testing.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
