Purpose of Position:

The SABES Afterschool Instructor is responsible for working with multiple stakeholders in the implementation of the STEM afterschool curriculum for grade 3-5 students at specific partner sites. The instructor will develop and implement weekly lesson plans that incorporate mentor support and prepare students for the STEM Showcase where they will present their student-driven projects based on feedback from the SABES coach. The instructor will also track student attendance, participate in required retreats, prepare materials for STEM lessons, and regularly report and communicate program progress to SABES team and site coordinator.  

Note: This position is casual (approx. 10-15 hours per week) and is not benefits eligible. Reliable transportation is required. Evenings are required and some weekends.  

Knowledge and Skill:

  • Experience teaching hands-on STEM projects and the engineering design process
  • Time management skills, attention to detail, and proactive problem solving
  • Passion for STEM educational outreach
  • Knowledge of Baltimore City and Baltimore City Public Schools (City Schools)
  • Experience relating to students, parents, and partners of similar demographics to Baltimore City
  • Strong communication (written and oral), organizational, customer service, and interpersonal skills
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Forms)

Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED and currently enrolled at a college/university pursuing a degree in related subjects
  • 3 Years of related experience in one or more of the following areas required:
    • Proven youth development and/or mentoring experience
    • Successful K-12 teaching; hands-on STEM projects and the engineering design process
    • Experience working with grades 3-5 preferred
  • Additional graduate level education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula

JHU Equivalency Formula: 

30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s  or Master’ degree focused on STEM or education degree

Internal and External Contacts:

  • Internal: Baltimore Programs Director, Out of School Time (OST) Program Manager, Barclay Program Manager, SABES Afterschool Coaches, and Other Instructors, and JHU Faculty and Staff who serve as SABES mentors
  • External: Village Learning Place (VLP), Child First Authority (CFA), US Dream Academy, Smart Steps, Park Heights Renaissance

Essential Duties & Responsibilities


  • Implement STEM afterschool program for grade 3-5 students
  • Coordinate with Johns Hopkins teams, mentors, and community members to facilitate STEM afterschool curriculum
  • Create weekly lesson plans
  • Teach STEM curriculum, provide guidance for student-driven projects, structure interactions with STEM experts
  • Supervise SABES participants in the classroom, adhering to safety guidelines and maintaining positive learning environment
  • Prepare materials for STEM lessons and coordinate with the program manager to order necessary supplies
  • Attend and support STEM Showcases (held once per year)

Training/Professional Development:

  • Participate in required retreats (1-2/yr), professional development (once per month) and staff meetings (as required)
  • Assist SABES afterschool coaches in presenting training materials based on expertise


  • Complete weekly reports providing updates on progress, implementation, and concerns at assigned SABES site(s) to SABES coach and Program Manager
  • Review and confirm SABES mentor schedules each month
  • Regularly communicate with mentors regarding lesson plan implementation and support
  • Create and maintain participant records

Measures for Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Submit timesheets by the established deadline
  • Share instructor lesson plans to the share drive weekly by established deadline
  • Clearly identify mentor role in lesson plans
  • Revise lesson plans based on coach’s feedback by established deadline
  • Submit materials order forms for replenishments for structured curriculum and student-driven projects by the established deadline
  • Each SABES-supported classroom has a student-driven project presentation at the spring STEM Showcase
  • Attendance at STEM Showcase
  • Strategies demonstrated in professional development are evident in lesson plans and coach observations
  • Growth in coaching observations over time
  • Attendance at all required meetings
  • Being on time for required meetings
  • On time submission of student and mentor attendance records
  • On time submission of written weekly reports for each implementation site
  • Completed mentor schedule in applicable software platform by established deadline
  • Provides evidence of communication with mentors via multiple outlets

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
