The Institute for Genetic Medicine is seeking a Research Technologist. The successful candidate will join a laboratory developing and utilizing cutting-edge high throughput technologies for dissection of complex genetic traits. After entry-level training under the general supervision of a faculty investigator or laboratory supervisor, the individual will be responsible for performing routine genetic tests in a research laboratory and contributing to general maintenance of the laboratory, equipment and supplies. The candidate will also present summaries and quality metrics of data generated at regular intervals. Additionally, must be capable of exercising independent judgment while participating in the planning of experiments and evaluating and interpreting results.
Specific duties & responsibilities:
- Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform experiments. These will require basic tissue culture, and/or cell separation methods, and laboratory methods/techniques associated with genetics and molecular biology such as: high-throughput genotyping, array-based resequencing, quantitative and qualitative analyses, as well as other functional and enzymatic assays.
- Extensive work with robotics equipment will be required.
- Careful records of all experiments performed and assessment of quality of data generated is critical
- Responsible for all aspects of a working genetics laboratory including managing and performing experiments and general laboratory organization and upkeep.
- Perform data generation using techniques such as PCR, qPCR, microchip arrays, and multiple sample library preparation protocols for next generation sequencing, including Haloplex, SureSelect, and TruSeq.
- Manages experiments from sample and reagent preparation to experimental testing and data collection.
- Analyzes data in terms of quality control and experimental diagnostics in preparation for statistical analysis.
- Careful record keeping of sample information and results to guarantee quality of experimentation.
- Accountable for laboratory management, involving tracking supply inventories and ensuring availability of laboratory reagents and material.
- Carries out routine equipment maintenance and upkeep.
- Ensures laboratory efficiency by following set protocols for lab cleanliness, organization and safety regulations.
This position will operate basic laboratory equipment and uses various software applications packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or test reports. This position will also prepare solutions and reagents, order materials and supplies, maintain sterile ready-to-use glassware, keep inventories of lab stocks, maintain laboratory equipment, and conduct routine radiation surveys. Must keep accurate and up-to-date records of experiments performed. Evaluates equipment performance and maintenance schedules.
BS/BA, or equivalent, in biology, chemistry or related field and six months related experience.
Formal coursework and laboratory experience in genetics and additional relevant laboratory experience acquired through undergraduate research, extracurricular activities, or summer employment is desirable.
JHU Equivalency Formula:
30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
