Our Centre

The Centre for Science Communication is one of the world's largest postgraduate facilities for teaching the practice of communicating science. As part of the University of Otago in Dunedin, a modern, bustling university city located on the southeasterly shores of the beautiful South Island of New Zealand, we are also a leading research centre in the academic discipline of Science Communication.

The scholarly field of Science Communication focuses on the complex and ever-changing relationship between the general public and the scientific community (including political, pedagogical, entertainment and informative dimensions). In addition to a general undergraduate minor in Science Communication, our postgraduate course offers endorsements in filmmaking, writing, and science and society.

The Role

We are seeking to appoint a full-time confirmation path Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Science Communication. Applications will be accepted from strong candidates in any of the areas listed above (filmmaking, writing, and/or science and society), with preference given to applicants who can teach into our postgraduate Science and Natural History Filmmaking course and potentially also to teach components of our new undergraduate minor in Science Communication.

In addition, you will be expected to develop and maintain an active research programme in your area of specialisation, garner external support through grants and/or commercial collaborations, and become a world-class leader as a practising science communicator.

Your Skills and Experience

  • A PhD in a relevant discipline.
  • Demonstrated teaching experience at tertiary level.
  • A deep understanding of visual storytelling.
  • A creative portfolio evidencing exceptional abilities and clear professionally recognised talent in the practice of science communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise a diverse range of postgraduate students to completion of their degrees.
  • Evidence of networking/collaborative/business acumen to facilitate student placements and to foster strategic Centre initiatives.
