Role Description

Cranfield is an exclusively postgraduate university that is a global leader for education and transformational research in technology and management.  The School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing (SATM) is a leading provider of postgraduate level engineering education, research and technology support to individuals and organisations. At the forefront of aerospace technology for over 60 years, the School delivers multi-disciplinary solutions to the complex challenges facing the aviation industry.

The Centre for Propulsion Engineering, within SATM at Cranfield, has a strong track record in power plant modelling and performance simulation research. Research activities in the past 50 years, on gas turbine applications in power and propulsion, cover virtually every aspect of the field, such as steady-state and transient performance simulation, diagnostics, novel cycles, engine control, advanced simulation methods and integration. Extensive participation in various EU and UK-based projects has strengthened and established the Centre as a key contributor to path breaking research while acquiring a peripheral view of the emergence of new technologies in the field. Propulsion Engineering Centre staff also run a large and extremely successful international activity embracing applied research, industrial short courses and leading MSc and PhD programmes. In the Centre there are over 150 MSc candidates, some 100+ Doctoral researchers and over 30 academic and research staff.

The Centre for Propulsion is also host to the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre (UTC) for Aero Systems Design, Integration & Performance, testimony of the Centre’s global visibility and extensive links with industry. The Admin position advertised is in the Rolls-Royce UTC, within the Centre for Propulsion Engineering. The UTC is placed between academia and industry and carries out research with a strong scientific and industrial relevance. The core competence of the UTC is its ability to undertake detailed modelling studies and performance simulations involving aero-thermal, multi-disciplinary models to improve and extend our understanding of power plant, aircraft and related systems’ integrated performance within, but also at the edges, of the operating envelope. There is also a large experimental activity supported by Rolls-Royce.

The UTC is the cornerstone of Cranfield’s relationship with Rolls-Royce. It currently enrols more than 6 Senior Academics (at Professorial and Senior Lecturer level), 5 Lecturers, 15 Research Fellows, 15 PhD students and 40 MSc students from the Centre’s Thermal Power MSc course (numbers can vary annually depending on project needs and overall research commitments).

The UTC also acts as a supporting ‘pillar’ to the new Aerospace Integration Research Centre (AIRC) at Cranfield (a £35M partnership between Rolls-Royce, AIRBUS, HEFCE and Cranfield) and SATM as a whole. It creates new research opportunities for other Groups and Centres, provides admin support on joint programmes, as well as a skilled human resource. The UTC is also vital from a student experience point of view. Placed in-between academia and industry, it provides every year a unique experience to those students who choose to undertake their Thesis research work with Rolls-Royce. Over the years more than 100 Thermal Power MSc students have been recruited by Rolls-Royce, and more than 20 PhD graduates (7 last year alone).  

The advertised position, being fully endorsed by Rolls-Royce, provides important administrative support to the entire UTC community and organisation. Some of the key responsibilities of the UTC Administrator are listed below;

  • Provide administrative support to the large UTC staff and student community
  • Provide administrative support to the UTC Director 
  • Help manage the UTC Confidentiality and Quality Plan
  • Undertake responsibilities that contribute indirectly towards ‘income generation’ 
  • Undertake other ‘ad-hoc’ duties, as required
