TECHNICAL ASSOCIATE II, Earth Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS), to perform diverse duties for the Collaborative Organization for Rock Deformation (CORD) in the Laboratories of Professors Pec and Evans. CORD is a collaborative facility between MIT and Brown University and the work will be done at both institutions. Will also interact with a CORD technical associate to be hired at Brown. The primary responsibilities will include maintaining the laboratory equipment (e.g., replacement of high-pressure seals and gaskets, calibration of load cells, displacement transducers, etc.) in dependable working order and enabling its safe and efficient operation; facilitating research collaborations with students, postdocs, and visiting scientists; training new users in collaboration with faculty and students; assisting visitors and lab users in running experiments; and organizing and ensuring consistent archiving of experimental data. Other duties include maintaining inventories of consumables and lists of suppliers; coordination of laboratory safety and training; and assisting in the design and implementation of new, innovative capabilities of the equipment. Depending upon the background and interests of the finalist, the position may offer an opportunity to be an active participant in the research being done in collaboration with the CORD members.
REQUIRED: a B.S. (M.S. or Ph.D. preferred) in experimental geological sciences, engineering, or physics; experience in the design and fabrication of mechanical and electronic systems; computer expertise, including CAD and data acquisition and machine control including software such as LabVIEW; and ability to work with a variety of people on diverse tasks. This is a two-year appointment with the possibility of extension based upon funding.
