The Yi-Wei Chang lab in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics has an opening for a Research Specialist position. The candidate should be a motivated and detail-oriented team-player who is looking to combine computational skills with cutting-edge electron cryotomography cellular imaging to study important biological questions.

Primary duties will include but are not limited to:

  1. Sample preparation for electron cryotomography imaging (including bacterial and mammalian cell cultures, and cryo-electron microscope grids preparation and manipulation)
  2. Help establish and maintain an automatic electron cryotomography pipeline (including data collection, process, and organization) through computational scripting and programming.
  3. Computational analysis of electron cryotomography data.
  4. General lab maintenance (e.g. ordering, biosafety, computer and network administration, sample storage and log maintenance, equipment management, etc.)

The candidate must have strong organizational and communication skills, and must be reliable and self-motivated. Willingness to learn new techniques and ability to coordinate several projects concurrently is essential. Other expectations of this position include attending and presenting data during lab meetings, actively engage in project discussions, help with writing protocols and Standard Operating Procedures, and assisting other members of the lab as needed.

Research Specialist B:

  1. Bachelor’s degree and 1-3 years’ experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  2. Bachelor’s degree in computer science, biology, biochemistry, microbiology, or related fields preferred.
  3. Strong computer programming skills and experience in research laboratories are highly desirable.

Research Specialist C:

  1. Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years’ experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  2. Bachelor’s degree in computer science, biology, biochemistry, microbiology, or related fields preferred.
  3. Must have at least 3 years’ experience in biological research laboratories. Experienced in bacteria and mammalian cell cultures, biochemical and molecular biology assays, protein purification and manipulation, and computational data analysis and organization.
  4. Strong computer programming skills with experience in electron microscopy and structural biology are highly desirable.
