Director, UBC School of Public Policy and Global Affairs

The Faculty of Arts at the University of British Columbia – Vancouver seeks an outstanding candidate for the position of Director of the UBC School of Public Policy and Global Affairs. The appointment as Director, anticipated to begin July 1, 2019, carries an initial five-year term, with the possibility of reappointment for a second term. 

Formed in 2017, UBC’s School of Public Policy and Global Affairs is a Professional School dedicated to global affairs and a broad approach to public policy issues. Bringing together scholars and practitioners across a wide range of research fields in the social, natural and applied sciences, as well as the humanities, the School fosters a deep interdisciplinary approach to complex local, national, and global problems, drawing upon its research expertise in the domains of sustainability, security and social justice, and its long-established strengths in Asia and democratic governance. The School is currently home to the Institute of Asian Research, the Liu Institute for Global Issues, the Centre for the Study of Democratic Institutions, and the Canadian International Resources and Development Institute and administers a graduate level professional program: the Master of Public Policy and Global Affairs (MPPGA).  For information, visit:

The position of Director provides an excellent opportunity for an outstanding scholar who will lead and shape a globally focused policy school for a new era, having primary responsibility for the management and operation of the School, with its world-class, professionally-oriented research and education programs geared toward building policy capacity for multiple sectors. The Director will be expected to maintain a leadership role in a variety of academic and professional settings by engaging stakeholders in business and government, enhancing and transforming public policy dialogue, and providing a global perspective on public policy research and education.

The Director will report to the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, chair the School’s Partnership Council, and participate in the School’s Advisory Council. Responsibilities will include: leading the School’s visioning and planning processes; setting strategic directions for the School; maintaining the School as an interdisciplinary hub for research, scholarship, and knowledge exchange; fostering research excellence; developing scholarly initiatives; recruiting, mentoring, and evaluating faculty; supporting academic programs and initiatives to ensure a high quality learning environment; maintaining and enhancing community, alumni, and donor partnerships; overseeing the financial health of the School; developing the School’s internal policies and procedures on governance and administrative matters; and continuing to build the profile of the School locally, nationally, and internationally.

We seek applicants who have a PhD, a distinguished record of research publications and scholarship activity commensurate with appointment at the rank of Full Professor (or senior Associate Professor may also be considered), a record of high quality undergraduate and graduate teaching, and graduate supervision, a record of policy engagement, which includes public scholarship and experience in engaging government, business, and not-for-profits in policy design, development, and implementation, and a record of leadership and administrative skills. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate vision and creativity, to foster a collaborative, respectful, and inclusive environment for students, staff, and faculty, to build relationships with policy leaders at all levels, and to liaise with granting agencies, industry partners, and other research sponsors.
