Job description

On 25th January 2018, the Prime Minister Theresa May announced the launch of the GBP 40 million National Institute of Coding, a key part of the government's efforts to drive up digital skills through the Industrial Strategy, which will equip people of all ages with the skills they need. The Institute brings together a range of universities, industry, training providers and professional bodies to address the UK's digital skills gaps.Coventry University is one of lead universities in the consortium.

The Institute of Coding (IoC) is a consortium of Highe rEducation Institutions (HEIs), large corporations, SMEs, established industry groups, experts in the delivery of distance/non-traditional learning and professional bodies. The Institute will work to address digital skills gaps, and forge stronger links between industry and education providers.

Our vision is to enhance the education and employability of every IoC learner, and ensure that employers and individuals across the UK can access the digital skills they need to compete in the global digital economy. This unique and innovative collaboration has been made possible with GBP 20m from the Office for Students (OfS) and match funding from universities and industry partners. The IOC will develop and deliver innovative, industry-focused higher education across the UK. It will develop accredited degree programmes and short courses aimed at professionals, as well as working to widen the participation of women, returners to work, and hard to reach groups. Digital skills are becoming important in a range of professions so we also aim to target these multiple industry sectors; including manufacturing, transport, healthcare, and the creative economy. As a core partner, Coventry University is committed to the success of the IOC, and we are establishing a dedicated team to achieve this.

We are looking for people who are keen to work in a demanding but rewarding environment, people who recognise the need for digital upskilling across industry in the UK, and want to be a part of the solution.  One thing is clear: you want  to make a difference. If this sounds like you, we invite you to apply for the exciting new posts we are creating to support the IOC.

The senior lecturer role is an integral part of the Coventry University IOC team. The post holder will play an important role in curriculum development and teaching programme delivery. You will contribute to teaching and learning in the field of Computer Science in Coventry University's Institute of Coding delivery and engage actively in industry sector oriented programmes at all levels, as well as CPD course development with a particular focus on data driven application and machine learning applications.

You will have relevant industrial or research experience in one or more of the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning and data science is an essential requirement for the post. Candidates with experience in developing GCHQ-accredited or other leading industrial certification programmes are particularly encouraged to apply. Prior work experience in degree apprenticeship is advantageous.

You will actively engage and manage learning innovation activities such as student learning record, learning analytics and university student software house, and contribute to the wider student experience through personal tutoring, participation in recruitment, and involvement in employability initiatives. You will contribute to committees and working groups, and where appropriate supervising or mentoring other members of staff, you will also undertake professional development in support of teaching, scholarly activities, and student welfare.

Coventry University is an ambitious, award-winning university, working globally with industry to help improve knowledge, skills and productivity.  We aim to align our work closely with the UK's Industrial Strategy whilst at the same time responding to national and regional strategic priorities.  We are proud to be one of the Institute of Coding's lead partners, helping the government to realise its ambitious digital economy strategy.
