This is a fabulous opportunity to join and lead an expanding, successful and multi-disciplinary School of Social Sciences, within an ambitious, diverse and vibrant university.

We are seeking an exceptional candidate to lead our School of Social Sciences in the next phase of its development. The School incorporates a number of disciplines and subject areas including, black studies, criminology, psychology, and sociology, with new policing provision about to launch. With a vibrant and growing research culture in all areas, and enjoying buoyant demand from students, the School is in an enviable position to build upon its strong reputation for practice oriented social science education.

The School of Social Science at Birmingham City University is a thriving academic community, with a strong track record of delivering excellent education at undergraduate, taught postgraduate and research postgraduate levels. Our location on our city centre campus in Birmingham’s Eastside, the city’s knowledge quarter, places us firmly at the heart of the city, and close to the many institutions and social constituencies with whom we work closely. Our continued growth in popularity has been accompanied by strong performance in core areas of student achievement, as well as with improvements in our research outputs, impact and environment. We are passionate about our teaching, and put students firmly at the heart of all our activities. We embrace a practice led, knowledge based approach to our teaching, which is research informed.

Birmingham City University is a thriving, modern university with a rich history in the city and wider region, with its roots dating back to 1843. With over 24,000 students, including many from countries across the globe, we are focused on teaching excellence. We place particular emphasis on practice-based programmes, which support student employability. We have expanded our base of applied research in recent years, with all courses being professionally relevant and taught in state-of-the-art facilities, being based in the Curzon building on our city centre campus – where we have invested over £250 Million in the last few years.

You will be expected to bring academic leadership, as a well as an excellent track record of achievement in a subject area relevant to the School. Whilst achieving TEF Gold and a strong REF are priorities, you will also be expected to show leadership in further enhancing the profile of the School, regionally, and beyond. This role offers an unrivalled opportunity for an academic leader with passion for higher education, and a clear vision for the School to make a difference. The title of Professor may be available to a suitably qualified and experienced candidate. If you wish to be considered for the title of Professor, you should indicate this in your application and comply with the University’s conferment procedure, which can be found alongside the Job Description for this role.

If you think you fit the bill, enjoy making a difference in HE, and thrive on supporting students and staff to excel, then we would be delighted to hear from you.
