An exciting opportunity for a senior clinical academic to work across both the clinical and academic environments as Professor and Head of Department of Psychiatry, a joint position with Monash University and Monash Health.

Located as part of the Monash Health Translation Precinct (MHTP), the Department of Psychiatry is a vital part of Monash University’s Faculty of Medicine Nursing and Health Sciences. The MHTP, a partnership of Monash University, Monash Health, and the Hudson Institute, is a cluster housing >600 research staff and students located at the Monash Medical Centre hospital campus, located just 1 km from Monash University’s main biomedical precinct co-location of the academic Department of Psychiatry with the clinical Mental Health services at Monash Medical Centre provides our academics, students, bench researchers, and clinician-scientists unparalleled access to patients, research facilities and collaborative opportunities, and signifies our intention for this Department to continue as a centre of international renown alongside Monash’s other major research strengths.

The Opportunity

The Professor and Head of Department of Psychiatry will be responsible for leadership and ongoing strategic development of Psychiatry academic research and teaching at Monash University’s School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health, in partnership with the equivalent Department at Alfred Health (MAPRC). This is an exceptional opportunity to lead, foster and grow excellence in academic psychiatry at the School of Clinical Sciences, which is the largest clinical school of Australia’s largest university. The role will also provide clinical services and research leadership in mental health at Monash Health, consistent with both institutions’ strategic plans to link academic and clinical practice.

The ideal candidate will have a distinguished international record in psychiatry encompassing research, clinical practice, and education. Candidates will have current registration with AHPRA in psychiatry (or be eligible for registration) and have a PhD or the equivalent though research achievement. A significant track record of research and research leadership is a prerequisite, and demonstrated ability to lead education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels is also required.

The professorial appointment will be a continuing appointment in the Department of Psychiatry and for a period of five years will include:

  • The role of Head of Department (with opportunity for renewal)
  • The role of Director of Research at Monash Health (with opportunity for renewal)

Start-up research funding may be available to the successful candidate to assist in the transfer of existing research to Monash or to establish research at Monash University.
