Northumbria is a research-rich, business-focused, professional university with a global reputation for academic excellence.  We have an impressive track record of collaborating with like-minded international research, education and business partners, conducting ground-breaking research and creating successful, multidisciplinary research projects that make an impact nationally and internationally.

We have always placed emphasis on creating and applying knowledge for the benefit of individuals, communities and the economy and, through excellent research, teaching and innovation, the University is pledged to transforming lives and making a powerful contribution to social, cultural and economic development. Northumbria is in the UK top 50 for research power and was recognised by Times Higher Education as having the biggest rise in research power of any university in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF).

As we prepare to launch the University strategy 2018-2023 there has never been a more exciting time to join Northumbria University as Deputy Director of the Research & Innovation Service (RIS) and to contribute to the achievement of our ambition to have world class research driving excellence in all of the University's activities.

The Research & Innovation Service provides professional support for strategy, policy and academic delivery of research and innovation; through a combination of central and Faculty-aligned provision. The Deputy Director is a key senior role and will support the Director of RIS to direct and oversee the implementation of the University’s Research Strategy, leading and developing a professional and pro-active service across all faculties, working closely with academics and other services. In particular the Deputy Director will be the professional lead for research quality and the REF, supporting the Director and academic leadership in the development and implementation of the institutional REF strategy and in tactical decision-making in relation to all aspects of the submission.

You will provide expert advice and opinion on University research matters, anticipating, influencing and interpreting national and international developments in research and translating these into University policy. You will be a strategic thinker and an experienced people manager, skilled in motivating and developing others to achieve results. Experience in leading, managing or delivering across a broad range of research management functions is desirable, whilst experience of supporting or managing submission to the REF or a similar national research evaluation exercise is essential to the role.

For an informal discussion about the role please contact Jennifer Stergiou, Director of RIS, on 07561 789 431
