Research Fellow in Augmented Reality for Through-life Engineering
We are looking to make an appointment to the position of Research Fellow in Augmented Reality for through-life engineering for a period of 24 months. The position focuses on developing augmented reality capability and demonstrators to transform the efficiency and effectiveness of the equipment manufacturing and maintenance processes.

We are looking to make an appointment to the position of Research Fellow in Augmented Reality for through-life engineering for a period of 24 months. The position focuses on developing augmented reality capability and demonstrators to transform the efficiency and effectiveness of the equipment manufacturing and maintenance processes. The project will explore the current manufacturing / maintenance processes, understand the types of data collected and consumed by the manufacturing / maintenance technician, and evaluate alternative ways to visualise the information. In this process the use of Artificial Intelligence will be explored with a view to embed in manufacturing / maintenance operations. A major emphasis will be on designing new AR systems driven by human factors.
This project is part of a wider EPSRC funded project titled: Digital Toolkit for optimisation of operators and technology in manufacturing partnerships (DigiTOP). The project is a collaboration between Cranfield and the Universities of Nottingham, Loughborough and University of the West of England. There will be close collaboration across these organisations.
The context of the project is driven by the emergence of Digital Manufacturing, which is changing the nature of work. In order to gain maximum value from these new Digital Manufacturing Technologies (DMTs), we need to be able to capture, model and predict the way that humans and technologies work together as a joint cognitive system. Through development of methods for use of novel sensing systems, virtual and augmented reality, machine learning and data analytics, we can inform the way that future Digital Manufacturing Technologies are designed and implemented in the manufacturing setting.
The successful candidate will have a PhD (or near completion) in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or similar discipline as well as having significant expertise and experience in augmented reality based projects.
