General Summary/Purpose

The Open Course Support Specialist participates in the design, development, production, implementation, and analysis of open online courses, web-based training, and open educational resources.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  1. The Open Course Support Specialist collaborates with faculty and Center for Teaching and Learning staff to develop and implement massive open online courses (MOOCs) and open educational resources for the Bloomberg School of Public Health.
  2. Works with CTL staff to provide support on a variety of platforms, including Coursera, FutureLearn, LeanPub, CoursePlus, and OpenCourseWare.
  3. Meets and corresponds with faculty and subject matter experts during the design and production phases of course development to ensure consistent observation of best practices and timely production.
  4. Advises faculty in the effective use of platform features and techniques.  
  5. Implements lectures, assessments, readings, and other course elements within a variety of learning management systems, including Coursera, FutureLearn, LeanPub, CoursePlus, and OpenCourseWare.
  6. Monitors active courses, responding to learner feedback and analytics, fixing errors, and confirming that the courses are complete and appropriate for the platform.
  7. Uses JIRA and agile techniques to manage project milestones and deadlines.
  8. Develops, maintains, and updates training materials and resources for conducting MOOC development and production.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education, or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of progressively responsible related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional experience may substitute for required education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Prior experience working closely with higher education faculty members preferred.
  • Working knowledge of issues surrounding open education and open educational resources.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to collect data, create reports, and prepare written communication with an attention to detail and accuracy.
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, especially PowerPoint.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
