Job Summary

Reporting to the Chief of Campus Security and Parking Services or their designee, Campus Security Corporals are experienced, senior level officers and are responsible for performing a wide variety of campus safety functions. Campus Security Corporals must exhibit leadership traits and characteristics, discretion, a comprehensive knowledge of the law and Caltech policies, and the highest ethical standards. Campus Security Corporals must be service-oriented and must actively assist Caltech community members in solving problems and maintaining the peace.

The duties of this classification include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Protecting life and property
  • Preventing crime
  • Ensuring a safe learning environment
  • Investigating reports of crime
  • Training newly hired officers
  • Working in a patrol or support function
  • Working as a shift supervisor in the absence of a Sergeant, or as directed

Shift rotation and days off vary according to assignment with occasional mandatory overtime required.

Job Duties

The following statements are the essential functions to be performed by an individual assigned to this job.

Must be able to:

  • Assume the lead role for personnel assigned to the rank of officer
  • Train newly hired personnel in patrol procedures and Caltech protocols, as required
  • Assume the role of Acting Sergeant in the absence of a Sergeant
  • Prepare Daily Observation Reports (DOR) for new hired officer personnel, during their training period
  • Communicate in a courteous, effective, and professional manner in a person, by telephone, two-way radio, and electronic media
  • Perform high visibility patrols on campus, at Caltech properties, and at student/faculty houses to discourage and deter crime
  • Respond to requests for assistance
  • Respond to emergency calls, fire alarms, intrusion alarms on campus
  • Render emergency First Aid and CPR when needed
  • Conduct health and safety checks as required
  • Prepare a daily log of shift activities and write incident reports
  • Write work requests
  • Patrol parking areas
  • Support traffic, parking, and vehicle permit programs
  • Receive incoming telephone calls and dispatch information/requests to officers working in the field
  • Provide access to authorized persons to Institute buildings and facilities
  • Provide safety escorts on- and off-campus
  • Work closely with local police and fire agencies
  • Represent the Institute in its relationships with the  community, government agencies, professional societies, and other groups
  • Ability to testify in court
  • Stay current with best practices in campus safety/security and community oriented policing strategies
  • Participate in crime analysis and prepare crime data
  • Maintain and update crime maps and statistics on a regular basis
  • Perform assigned duties as requested

Basic Qualifications

  • Analytical and problem solving skills with experience in collecting and reviewing simple and complex data, drawing valid conclusions and making effective decisions
  • Ability to prioritize work assignments
  • Accurate report writing skills including the proper use of grammar, punctuation and spelling
  • Excellent computer skills in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, internet, email applications, Microsoft office suite and databases
  • Valid certification and comprehensive knowledge and of the Jeanne Clery Act
  • Must be able to walk the Campus properties
  • Candidates must exhibit excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Must have a valid California BSIS guard card, first aid, and CPR certification
  • California driver’s license (with a clean driving record) and be able to be qualified as an Institute’s Caltech designated driver (subject to the specific requirements approved by the Institute’s insurance carrier)
  • Must be able to compose and comprehend written reports
  • Irregular work schedule, multiple concurrent tasks, frequent interruptions, detailed work, frequent deadlines, periods of concentrated attention, and frequent contact and interaction with people

*Physical Requirements:

  • Standing at times for prolonged periods, walking, reaching, climbing, lifting 50 lbs. or more, carrying, writing, pushing, pulling, hearing, squatting/kneeling, driving, speaking, seeing, and restraining suspects. 
  • Must be able to walk Campus properties
  • May be exposed to noise, chemicals, heat/cold, carcinogens, fumes/gases, dirt, and human tissue/fluids, extreme weather and temperatures

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possession of a Basic POST Certificate or its equivalent (Ex: Levels I, II, and III Reserve POST certification)
  • Previous related experience in municipal law enforcement, campus law enforcement, corporate security, military police or master at alarms, and/or campus safety in a Higher Education environment
  • A minimum of 30-semester units from a regionally accredited college/university, with a focus on criminal justice or organizational leadership
  • Peace Officers Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) 832 P.C. and/or 832.2 P.C. certification
  • Two years of experience at Caltech at the rank of officer
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Title IX and VAWA
