The Centre for Growth is a centre for expertise in business and economic growth and a focal point for growth programmes and other small business activity at Aston Business School. The Centre for Growth has been running high profile and high impact support for SMEs since 2011 including the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses programme, the Aston Programme for Small Business Growth, and Pitchfest West Midlands. The Centre works with external funders and partners, for example delivering growth programmes in collaboration with other Small Business Charter holding business schools, and is a strategic partner in the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Growth Hub. ERC, the national Enterprise Research Centre run jointly by Aston University and the University of Warwick, operates at Aston within the Centre for Growth.
This is a new role within the Centre for Growth team at Aston Business School delivering business support to SMEs, and has particular responsibility for managing the Midlands regional activity for the ‘Be the Business’ mentoring programme, Mentoring for Growth. Mentoring for Growth matches industry experts from leading companies such as BAE Systems, Siemens and GSK, with regional business leaders from Midlands SMEs, and supports them through a programme of one-to-one mentoring. It will be delivered alongside Productivity through People, a new growth programme for the Midlands, and the Relationship Manager will be part of a small team working collaboratively to develop and deliver these activities which have the shared aim of helping SMEs to increase their productivity.
The post-holder will ensure the successful delivery of Mentoring for Growth, working closely with colleagues at the Centre for Growth and within the context of a range of targeted support for our SME beneficiaries. Managing relationships with and between industry mentors and SME mentees will be central to the role, and key objectives will include ensuring successful and beneficial mentoring relationships, monitoring engagement and outcomes, and building the profile and SME pipeline of future mentees.
The successful candidate will be passionate about providing quality support to small businesses and delivering successful outcomes for beneficiaries. Previous experience of business support is essential, as are highly developed skills in building and maintaining productive relationships in a business context, and the ability to thrive in a fast paced and busy environment, working collaboratively and supporting others in a flexible and productive team.
