Professor of Manufacturing, College of Engineering

Swansea University is seeking to appoint an international leader in manufacturing with expertise in smart and future technologies to our College of Engineering, located on Swansea’s brand new Bay Campus.

Now one of the top 10 in the UK, Swansea’s College of Engineering has enjoyed a significant period of transformative growth, investment and development, including exceptional growth in research income.  Student and staff numbers have doubled over the last decade, and the international research profile of the College has grown substantially.

A new science and technology research centre of excellence for fundamental research known as IMPACT (Institute for Innovative Materials, Processing and Numerical Technologies Project) forms a major part of the College expansion.  Part-funded by the European Regional Development Funds, IMPACT will deliver research with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, providing a highly competitive, world-class, fundamental and high impact resource, and an increased capacity to drive innovation.  Following the announcement of the ground-breaking £1.3bn City Deal “Internet Coast”, IMPACT is complemented by the ‘Factory of the Future’ initiative involving a £7m new building housed within the College of Engineering for applied research, development and innovation acceleration.

The Professor of Manufacturing will lead IMPACT’s Future Manufacturing Technologies research group - currently consisting of seven academics plus postdoctoral and doctoral researchers - and will shape activities in the Factory of the Future. They will bring an internationally leading track record of research excellence in Smart Manufacturing or an Industry 4.0-related discipline.  This appointment requires an outstanding individual with proven strategic and research leadership skills.  The successful candidate will drive a world-leading research programme engaging with industrial and other partners in alignment with the University’s commitment to translational research.  Therefore applicants should evidence a sustained record of developing, attracting funding for and leading major programmes of individual or collaborative research.

The new Professor will join the University at a time of transformation, investment and ambition.
