Durham University is one of the UK’s oldest and most distinctive universities with a global alumni population of over 175,000 graduates. The Development and Alumni Relations Office (DARO) is seeking to appoint an ambitious and experienced advancement professional to design and deliver a meaningful, engaging alumni relations programme whilst also leading the university’s efforts to attract substantial philanthropic income via annual and campaign-led appeals. As the University prepares to embark upon its landmark Durham Inspired campaign, the post-holder will play a significant leadership role contributing to the success of the Campaign’s engagement and fundraising goals.
The Deputy Director will lead the Alumni & Supporter Engagement (ASE) team which provides alumni relations and fundraising appeals support to all of the University’s departments, colleges, and student experience partners – such as Experience Durham which encompasses our sports, music, drama, and volunteering activities. The ASE team takes primary responsibility for alumni and stakeholder events, volunteer management, alumni communications, annual giving activities, and internal coordination of all alumni activity across the University. The team also has a significant role to play in the attraction and promotion of career-enhancement and employment opportunities for current students and existing alumni.
As a key figure within the DARO management team, the Deputy Director would be expected to manage a portfolio of senior volunteer and supporter relationships, including members of the University’s affiliated supporter organisations (including Dunelm Society, Dunelm USA, and Dunelm Asia-Pacific).
The role will be based within the historic city of Durham, though regular domestic and international travel is expected. The post-holder will report directly to the Director of Development and Alumni Relations and will work directly with members of the university executive, senior academics, and other senior stakeholders from around the University.
