SALARY:

Lecturer 4: 21,611 – 23,893 RMB/month (with the opportunity to go to 26,713RMB/month based on future annual performance and evaluations after being in post) 

Lecturer 5: 27,115-29,866RMB/month (with the opportunity to go to 33,222RMB/month based on future annual performance and evaluations after being in post) 

Associate Professor: 34,738 – 37,469 RMB/month (with the opportunity to go to 41,063 RMB/month based on future annual performance and evaluations after being in post) 

In addition, members of academic staff are entitled to accommodation (RMB 4000/month) and travel allowances, medical insurance, and relocation expenses. Overseas staff may receive a tax “holiday” of up to three years, depending on nationality and personal circumstances.

THE UNIVERSITY

Founded in 2006, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a joint venture of Xi’an Jiaotong University in China and the University of Liverpool in the UK. As an independent Sino-foreign cooperative university, XJTLU captures the essence of both of its prestigious parents and is the first and only of its kind approved by the Ministry of Education.

The language of instruction is English. Its undergraduate programmes are accredited in both China and the UK. XJTLU comprises of seven schools with over 15,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The university’s objective is to become a truly research-led institution and has recently committed significant investments into its research development and the expansion of its PhD programmes.

LOCATION

XJTLU is located in the Higher Education Town of Suzhou’s Industrial Park (SIP). Suzhou is a 2-hour drive west of Shanghai. The city is well-connected via nearby airports (Shanghai, Wuxi, and Hangzhou) to cities such as Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo, and Taipei, and via high-speed rail to most major cities in China.

Suzhou has a long history of being an educational center of China. And the Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), with its abundance of research and development opportunities, is a regional hub of innovative change and home to over 120 of the Fortune 500 Companies. Greater Suzhou represents the fourth largest concentration of economic activity in China in terms of GDP, with a GDP per capita exceeding that of the UK.

Suzhou encompasses the spirit of both old and new in China, with the historic old town’s canals, UNESCO World Heritage Site gardens, and many museums attracting millions of tourists annually. SIP offers an excellent quality of life with high environmental standards. The nearby Jinji Lake provides attractive views, by day and by night, and there is a variety of shopping facilities, international and local restaurants, entertainment hubs and nightlife. Suzhou is also home to four international schools. Suzhou has been ranked the 74th most livable city in the 2018 Global Livability Index.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINES SCHOOL Suzhou (IBSS)

International Business School Suzhou (IBSS) at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is growing in size and influence in pursuit of its vision to be a leading international business school. The school is based on strong principles of internationalism, innovation, inspiration and integrity, which together ensure that we have a positive impact on society through our teaching, research and business engagement. In that pursuit, IBSS became the youngest business school to be accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) in 2016, and again, the youngest School to receive EQUIS accreditation in 2018.

IBSS consists of five departments: Intelligent Operations and Marketing (IOM), Strategic Management and Organizations (SMO), Accounting, Finance, and Economics with over 100 faculty members and more than 5,000 students from over 60 different countries. IBSS delivers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, MBA, PhD and Executive Education programmes across a range of business disciplines.

The Department of IOM, which encompasses the fields of Operations Management, Marketing, Information Management, and Project Management, is set to become an independent academic unit with the beginning of the 2020/21 academic year, as a result of splitting the original Department of Management. At present, the IOM department has a strong team of around 30 academic staff, publishing in top journals, such as Journal of Operations Management (UTD), MIS Quarterly(UTD), Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science (ABS 4*), European Journal of Operational Research (ABS 4), Journal of Service Research (ABS 4),  International Journal of Production Economics (ABDC A*) and among others. Members of the department teach a large number of undergraduate students in marketing, business administration, and information management and information system programmes as well as postgraduate students enrolled in the MSc Operations and Supply Chain Management, MSc Project Management, as well as MSc Management or the IMBA.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Applications are invited for Lecturer/Associate Professor in Data Science at IBSS of XJTLU. XJTLU is a research-led university. In this context, even though the workload of faculty in IBSS is generally shared between teaching, research, and service, early-career faculty members are expected to spend the majority of their time on research, followed by teaching, then service. Research activities include the publication of research articles, attendance of international conferences, and applications for research funding. Research performance in the School is benchmarked on internationally recognized lists of journal quality such as the Academic Journal Guide (UK) – a.k.a. the ABS list – and the ABDC list (Australia). The target levels on those lists are ABS3/ABDC-A or above.

The successful candidate will be expected to deliver lectures and tutorials across all years of the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes; to supervise undergraduate, master’s and potentially doctoral dissertations.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:

For a Lecturer post, you will have:

  • A PhD or equivalent in Data Science and have an independent, internationally-recognised research plan in a relevant active field of research
  • Candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas: Machine Learning, Data Mining, Data Processing, Statistics, etc.
  • Excellent English communication skills are essential.
  • A track record in ABS3/ABDC-A or above refereed publications, or demonstrate potential to do so
  • A strong record in attracting funding for research, or demonstrate potential to attract such funding
  • Enthusiasm for delivering high quality undergraduate and postgraduate programmes
  • The attitude and ability to engage in continuous professional development
  • Willingness to take administrative role in the department and school.

For Associate Professor, in addition to the above, you will have:

  • A strong potential for research leadership in the subject area
  • A track record in ABS3/ABDC-A or above refereed publications and success in securing external research grant
  • Relationships with external organisations and funders/ and knowledge and experience of key sectors or business challenges
  • Strong connections with business, government and/or non-profit organisations

COMPENSATION PACKAGE:

Members of Academic Staff receive generous subsidies for accommodation, travel, children’s education, and medical insurance. A relocation allowance is provided. Non-Chinese passport holders may qualify for multi-year income tax “holidays”, depending on nationality and tax residency.  

CITIZENSHIP AND VISA REGULATIONS:

Employment at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is regulated by Chinese Labour Laws, and must comply with the regulations of the provincial government. These regulations stipulate who is eligible for legal employment with regard to obtaining work permits and visas.  Please be advised candidates over 65 may be not eligible for a work visa in the P.R. China.
