The University of Kurdistan Hewlêr was established in 2006 by His Excellency Nechirvan Barzani. At the time of the University’s establishment, Mr. Barzani was the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and he wanted to establish an educational institution that would contribute to the development of the Kurdistan Region by being abreast of the technological, economic, and political developments around the world, and with English being the medium of teaching and learning. 

Since May of 2019, Mr. Barzani has been appointed as the President of the Kurdistan Region after having an illustrious career of service in the government. In line with Mr. Barzani’s vision for the University and the Region, the University of Kurdistan Hewler works towards becoming the centre of academic excellence for teaching and research in order to raise the standards of higher education throughout the Region.
