Assistant/Associate Professor Position of Geomechanics in Hydrocarbon Recovery

Skoltech Center for Hydrocarbon Recovery (CHR) invites applications for a faculty position of geomechanics (numerical modeling of coupled geomechanics/fluid mechanics phenomena for hydrocarbon recovery) with a tentative starting date of 01.01.2021 (later starting dates may be considered).

A candidate must hold a Ph.D. degree (or equivalent) in Geology and have extensive practical experience in integrated quality characterization of carbonate, low permeable, unconventional and other complex reservoirs, including application of sequence stratigraphic and depositional modeling approaches for properties distribution. He / She has to have comprehensive understanding of routing and special core analyses and be able to design and implement an integrated reservoir core study, aimed at solution of a particular hydrocarbon recovery issue. Industrial experience in exploration and production of carbonate, low permeable and other complex reservoirs is essential. Expertise in assessment of formation damage risks is also relevant. Since integrated reservoir study presumes work with large geo-databases, previous experience in geo-data management is advantageous.

The candidate has to have proven competence in generating complex proposals for geo-scientific R&D projects, negotiating contracts with industry partners, as well as their further execution. The candidate has to have at least 5 years of experience of research supervision and management of large international research projects, executed by multicultural and multidisciplinary teams. Previous lecturing experience in English as well as good research and business relationships with international educational and scientific institutions are essential.

The successful candidate will have a proven ability to make a significant research impact and provide strategic research and education leadership in one or several CHR research disciplines to develop the CHR/Skoltech reputation in oil and gas industry and academic standing. Faculty duties include teaching at graduate level, advising student and innovation projects, conducting fundamental and applied research. All activities at Skoltech are carried out in English, therefore, candidates must have excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

The mission of CHR is to conduct research, education and innovations in the area of hydrocarbon recovery. Special emphasis is placed on exploration and production of unconventional and hard-to-recover resources. Main CHR directions are geomechanics, enhanced oil recovery, technologies for exploration and production of unconventional reservoirs, advanced reservoir simulations, permafrost and gas hydrates. CHR closely cooperates with the Russian industry and focuses research, education and innovation activity on existing and future the technological needs of oil and gas industry. CHR collaborates closely with other Skoltech CREIs and with leading Russian and international research universities/centers including Moscow State University Moscow, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, University of Oil and Gas named Gubkin, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Calgary, University of Herriot-Watt, and others.

We offer:

  • A challenging job in an international, dynamic and professional environment.
  • Synergy between science, technology and practice.
  • Internationally competitive compensation package (salary commensurate with experience, qualifications and previous publication record, housing allowance in case relocation to Moscow will be needed, medical insurance).
