The School of Law and Government:

The School of Law and Government offers programmes in Law both at undergraduate and graduate level, including a BCL (recognised by the Honorable Society of King's Inns as an approved law degree), a BA in Economics, Politics and Law, law as a Joint Honours BA subject, a LLM, a MA in European Law and Policy, and a PhD programme. It also offers a MA in Data Protection and Privacy Law jointly with the School of Computing. The School has a particular interest in socio-legal studies and promotes interdisciplinary research, through the DCU Brexit Institute and Law Research Centre. The School is committed to high quality research, expects its staff to publish regularly in leading journals and supports its staff in such work. We have led research programmes supported by the Irish Research Council, the EU and other national and international funders.

The School of Law and Government intends to appoint a new Assistant Professor in in Law, on a permanent contract, to begin on 1 September 2020. We especially welcome applicants with a strong international research profile.

Skills and Experience

  • Applicants for the position must hold an honours degree and should have completed or submitted a PhD.
  • The successful candidate will have experience of university teaching at lecturer/assistant professor level on a full-time basis.
  • Current teaching requirements include subjects such as data protection law, company and commercial law, the law of real property, intellectual property, contract, and trusts.
  • The successful candidate will be able to convincingly demonstrate a strong commitment to academic research and should have a track-record of international peer-reviewed publications.
  • The successful candidate should be capable of working in a team and contributing to developing the teaching and research agenda within the School, as well as supporting the School’s fund-raising activities through grant applications.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaching and Learning

The successful candidate will be required to contribute to the development, teaching, and assessment and administration across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes:

  • To include module design and delivery,
  • Supporting and evaluating students on placements visits and writing reports,
  • Contributing to the design, development, and management of future programmes and other developments in the field of law,
  • Supervising undergraduate and postgraduate theses, and
  • Contribute to the wider teaching of the School as required by the Head.

Research and Scholarship

The successful candidate will be committed to high-quality research and publication in the field of law on an individual and a collaborative basis.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Publish articles in leading peer-review journals and/or books with high-profile publishers;
  • Develop and support research initiatives with the School Law and Government and the wider university;
  • Apply for grants to contribute to the School’s research agenda; and
  • Attract and supervise high-calibre PhD students.

Service and Contribution to University and Society

Activities taken on the successful candidate’s own initiative, or allocated by the Head of School, may include:

  • Engaging with policy-makers and the media,
  • Contributing to law reform,
  • Participating in school and university meetings,
  • Representing the School in marketing and the recruitment of students,
  • Developing relationships with stakeholders within and outside the University.

Mandatory training:

The postholder will be required to undertake the following mandatory compliance training: Orientation, Health & Safety, and Data Protection (GDPR). Other training may need to be undertaken when appropriate.
