The Department of Manufacturing and Civil Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering, at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) hereby announces a position as Professor/Associate professor in Energy Technology with focus on Sustainable Energy:

The Department of Manufacturing and Civil Engineering is located at NTNU Campus Gjøvik and has an educational and research profile, which contributes to solutions for the global societies’ central challenges within the area of sustainable solutions in industry and society. One of these challenges is the energy sector.

The department has 8 professors, 28 associate professors, six in other academic positions and 13 research fellows at present. We are responsible for the following disciplines: Construction management, Renewable energy, Geomatics, Civil engineering, Mechanical engineering, Technology design, Management and Sustainable manufacturing. The faculty members are divided into four faculty groups: Materials and constructions, Civil engineering & Geomatics, Energy and Environment and Manufacturing.

Gjøvik is one of three main towns bordering Norway's biggest lake, Mjøsa. The two counties surrounding Mjøsa form the “Innlandet” region. Gjøvik is located 93 km north of Oslo Airport and 123 km from Oslo, the capital of Norway. The Gjøvik region, with nearly 70.000 inhabitants, is the technological and industrial centre of Innlandet, and one of the leading centres in Norway.

The candidate will be responsible for research and teaching within the area assigned to the Energy and Environment research group. Teaching and tutoring activities will be on all levels (bachelor, master and PhD).

We are looking for a candidate who is dedicated to research and has the ability and desire to build a strong research team. The position provides a large degree of freedom concerning the direction of the successful candidate’s research and teaching activities. The position is part of a long-term strategic plan to build a strong, sustainable research team.

We are seeking outstanding candidates who have demonstrated teaching, research and practical experience in the field of sustainable energy/renewable energy, specifically bioenergy and solar energy.  In addition to the focus area, it is desirable that the candidate can demonstrate teaching, research and practical experience in some of the following areas:

  • Heating and power technology
  • Cooling technology 
  • Energy storage, thermal and chemical
  • Environmental technology
  • Mathematical modelling of energy system and advanced mathematical modelling of the power energy facilities’ and units’ dynamics
  • Fluid mechanic and turbo machines
  • Energy efficiency; specifically industrial and building sectors
  • Software skills related to energy and other relevant areas

For the position, a doctoral degree in the field of energy technology and sustainable /renewable energy with focus area: bioenergy, solar energy or another relevant field is required. If all other matters are equal in the evaluation of candidates, weight will be placed on candidates with multi-disciplinary education and research background. In addition to scientific background, the candidate should demonstrate high level of skills regarding teaching and communication.

The successful applicant for a professorship must be able to document his/her extensive disciplinary qualifications in important fields within the discipline. His/her individual work must document scientific expertise in one or more parts of the discipline, particularly the fields the professorship has a specific responsibility for. Weight will be placed on the ability to supervise and initiate research and development work.

Emphasis will be put on pedagogical skills in the recruitment process. The evaluation of the candidate will be based on documented pedagogical material, including pedagogical education/training, the presentation of academic work, experience from supervising masters-level students and doctoral candidates and teaching, as well as other pedagogical matters. The evaluation will consider both the quality and the scope.

Academic staff who are employed without having formal pedagogical qualifications in university level teaching and are unable to document equivalent qualifications, are required to successfully complete a recognized course that gives a pedagogical qualification in university level teaching within two years of taking the appointment. The university offers such courses.

The applicants that have been short-listed will be invited for interviews and a demonstration of their pedagogical ability, usually in the form of a trial lecture.

The professor is to be jointly responsible for disciplinary matters together with other academic staff at the department. The professor is required to participate in teaching activities in accordance with the relevant curriculum and assist in further developing the teaching programme, including continuing education. The professor is to supervise master students, research fellows and doctoral candidates in his/her discipline. The professor must agree to participate in administrative work.

The professor is obliged to follow the regulations that concern changes and developments within the discipline and/or the organizational changes concerning activities at NTNU.

It is assumed that newly employed staff in academic positions who do not already master a Scandinavian language are to obtain within three years knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at an equivalent standard to level three in the Norwegian for Foreigners courses provided at the Department of Language and Literature. The University provides such courses.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants.

The position as professor is normally remunerated with a minimum gross salary from NOK 611 700 to NOK 1 211 300 per annum, depending on qualifications and work experience.

The position as associate professor is remunerated with a minimum gross salary from NOK 558 500 to NOK 860 500 per annum, depending on qualifications and work experience.

There will be a 2 % deduction to The Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross salary.
