The Department of Sociology and Social Policy (http://www.LN.edu.hk/socsp/) brings together local and international scholars with research experience and publication record in the major areas of sociology and social policy. The Department offers undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in sociology and social policy, and is a recipient of the University’s Research Excellence Award and Teaching Excellence Awards. The Department hosts the MSocSc Programme in Comparative Social Policy (International), and co-hosts the Health and Social Services Management stream with the Asia Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies.

We achieved outstanding results in the 2020 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) of the University Grants Committee (UGC) of Hong Kong. We have been successful in winning external competitive grants, and attracting MPhil and PhD students from around the world, including the awardees of the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme.

General Requirements

We are looking for active researcher who could contribute to the academic profile of the Department, supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students, and teach courses offered by the Department. The courses on offer are available on the departmental website. The normal teaching load is around 6 hours per week per semester. The appointment is expected to start in August 2022 or soon thereafter.

Applicants should have a PhD degree in sociology, social policy or a related discipline, with relevant teaching experience and publication record. For this post, we are looking for a scholar who works in any area of sociology and social policy. A record of obtaining research grants will be a distinct advantage.

Applicants should provide information on their research interests and research plans, teaching portfolio, and evidence of quality teaching. Excellent communication and presentation skills are essential. The appointee is expected to have a strong commitment to teaching excellence and collegiality; engage actively in research and grant applications; and contribute to scholarly activities and services in the Department and the University. Shortlisted applicants may be required to submit a sample of publications.

Appointment

The conditions of appointment will be competitive. Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity and incoming passage and baggage allowance for the eligible appointees.

Appointments will normally be made on an initial contract of three years, which, subject to review and mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointments with possibility of consideration for substantiation.
