Job description
Applications are invited for a clinical research fellow to undertake research focussed on advanced intraoperative imaging in brain tumour surgery under the supervision of Mr Jonathan Shapey within the Department of Surgical & Interventional Imaging, School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences, King’s College London and the Department of Neurosurgery, King’s College Hospital.   
 
This full-time post is for 3 years and based at the St Thomas’ and Denmark Hill Campus. There will be clinical duties related to the research project, including care of patients at King’s College Hospital.
 
Applicants should be medically qualified with full GMC registration.  The post is suitable for Specialty Trainees in Neurosurgery who wish to undertake a PhD and gain additional sub-specialty experience in neuro-oncology and image guided surgery. Applicants will be required to take an Out-Of-Programme Research (OOPR) period from their current training programmes.   
 
The candidate should have excellent interpersonal, analytical and problem solving skills with a proven ability to manage projects, work to deadlines and collaborate with clinical teams.  
 
Prior research experience and peer-reviewed publications are highly desirable but not essential.  
 
This post will be offered on a fix term contract for 3 years (commencing 01 April 2022) 
This is a full time post – 100% full time equivalent

Key responsibilities
  

  • To undertake and deliver on clinical research projects in advanced intraoperative hyperspectral imaging for brain tumour surgery that will contribute to a PhD thesis.  
  • To help with regulatory aspects of projects; identify & recruit patients for studies; assist in the surgery of recruited individuals. 
  • To analyse study data, write up and present study results.  
  • To support other research activity within the department.  
  • To contribute to the dissemination of research through public engagement activities. 
  • To work to clinical & scientific deadlines. 
  • To provide clinical support in Neurosurgery, as required.

Skills, knowledge, and experience 
 
Essential criteria  

 
Education/qualification & training 
1.       MBBS or equivalent; MRCS or equivalent; Full GMC registration with licence to practice 
 
Knowledge/skills 
2.       Knowledge of current neurosurgical practice and the management of brain tumours 
3.       Good IT / computing skills 
4.       Good verbal & written communication skills  
 
Personal characteristics 
5.       Ability to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team 
 
Desirable criteria 
 
1.       Research experience, including presentations/publications 
2.       Data analysis & statistical knowledge 
3.       FRCS (Neuro.Surg) or equivalent
