Director Secretary of State’s Office, Net Assessment and Challenge (SONAC)

£93,000 p.a. More may be available for an exceptional candidate

London

It is an incredibly exciting time to be joining the Ministry of Defence. The Integrated Review and Defence Command Paper, published in 2021, gives us a powerful and progressive mandate to change what we do and how we do it.

As set out in the Defence Command Paper, we are establishing this new post in our Head Office to create and lead a new independent team at the heart of Defence. This post will be fundamental to embedding challenge and long-term strategic analysis into the department. Done well, the holder of this role has the opportunity to drive improved strategic decision making; guided by clear objectives that are threat focused and evidence driven.

The successful applicant will work directly to the Defence Secretary on priority issues he has identified, providing alternative views, especially through engaging external voices. This will include regular interactions with think tanks, academia and international partners. They will also need to work in partnership with the wider department to ensure MOD designs robust strategy with analysis, challenge and testing consistently embedded from the outset.

We are seeking applications from senior leaders with a track record of building high performing teams in complex organisations; people with experience of developing and delivering strategy, who have the courage to speak truth to power and are comfortable challenging assumptions, influencing direction and channelling diverse views.

This is a challenging leadership role well suited to someone who is strategic, analytical and who has a track record of collaboration and innovative thinking. The successful candidate will play a critical role in the design and delivery of the future Defence strategy, working alongside a great team of talented and committed colleagues.

Closing date: 30 January 2022.
