VACANCY FOR A POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL AND POLITICAL SCIENCES

The University of Cyprus announces two (2) postdoctoral researcher positions at the Department of Social and Political Sciences. The selected candidates will undertake comparative ethnographic fieldwork in refugee reception sites in Greece and Cyprus. The positions are funded by the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) under the project “Pro-and anti-migrant mobilization in Eastern Mediterranean refugee reception sites (MEDRECEPTIONS)” [Excellence Hub 0421/0201].DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To organise and engage in high-quality individual and collaborative ethnographic research for nine months in Greece (1 position) and Greece and Cyprus (1 position).
  • To organise and undertake desk research, in service of the project aims and under the direction of the Principal Investigators, Dr Antonis A. Ellinas (University of Cyprus) and Dr Olga Demetriou (University of Durham).
  • To contribute to and publish the research and writing of high-quality research outputs for academic and non-academic audiences.
  • To plan and manage own research activity and research resources in collaboration with others and contribute to planning as part of the research project.
  • To understand and convey material of a specialist or highly technical nature to the team or group of people through presentations and discussions.
  • To work with other colleagues in the research group, as appropriate, to identify areas for research, develop new research methods and extend the research portfolio.
  • To deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines by discussing with the Principal Investigators and offering creative or innovative solutions.
  • To engage in wider citizenship regarding the RIF grant, in the process of enhancing career development (e.g. contributing to conference organisation, public outreach, giving an early career researcher perspective to grant activities).
  • To contribute to fostering a collegial and respectful working environment which is inclusive and welcoming and where everyone is treated fairly with dignity and respect.
  • To engage in continuing professional development by participation in relevant training and development courses.

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS

  • First degree in Political Science, Anthropology, or a related subject.
  • PhD in Political Science, Anthropology, or a related subject with a focus on migration, activism, mobilization, or the Eastern Mediterranean.
  • Experience in conducting high quality academic research that involves fieldwork and/or ethnographic methods.
  • Demonstrable ability to write material of a quality commensurate with publication in highly-visible journals.
  • Demonstrable ability to present research papers at national and international conferences and communicate complex information to specialists and within the wider academic community.
  • Demonstrable ability to work cooperatively as part of a team, including participating in research meetings.
  • Ability to work independently on own initiative and to strict deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, in particular to ensure excellent working relationships with collaborators.
  • Proficiency in English and Greek.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Publication record in peer-reviewed journals, commensurate with stage of career.
  • A track record of presenting research at conferences or workshops, commensurate with stage of career.
  • Knowledge of relevant academic literature.
  • Demonstrable ability to plan and manage independent research.
  • An understanding of sensitive and ethically-aware approaches to field research.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

The contract is for an initial period of 15 months (140 hours per month). The monthly salary is €1750 (gross earnings, before taxes). Employee contributions will be deducted from this amount. The position does not include a 13th Salary bonus.
